I've got two 2000 M2s. One of which I'm trying to restore to stock. Once in a while I'll notice something that makes me go, huh? What I noticed this weekend is that both of my M2s have had the license plate brackets cut off and not too delicately either. Like someone took a steak knife and sawed it off. So I googled M2 images and see a pretty even split of photos of M2s with the license plate portion cut off. My question for you is, If you cut off your license plate bracket, why? |

The original bracket was huge and ugly! The portion that held the license plate also served as a fender and as a result it hung down low below the license plate and also was wider than the license plate. Google the M2 and you'll see... |

Yeah. I've looked at a lot of pictures and pictures come in at about 50/50 with/without the bracket. I'm going back to the full bracket because I like it better than just the plate hanging down there. In profile, the bracket continues a curve that starts at the bottom of the tail section. With the bracket cut off the curve gets broken near the end. I just want to make sure there was no structural reason for cutting it off. |

I'm pretty sure that everyone that has cut their's off did it for aesthetics only. If you like the looks of it, more power to you, since you don't see many that still have them uncut! |

Before I changed my bike to the S1 tail I had trimmed a couple inches off the fender, leaving just enough of the fender to reattach the reflector strip and clear the plate by about 1/2" top and bottom. I used a file to reshape the final edge on the sides and blend it to the back of the fender, rather than just chop the whole thing off completely. Wish I had some pics to post up for you... the stock set up just seemed like too much of a mud flap. |

Take a look at my profile pic. Mine is chopped by a PO and I didn't even realize that till someone recently told me. It is not chopped as much as most are. I don't know if mine ever had the reflector strip? Did the 2000's have that? |

Mine is a y2k and it did. The stock fender is so big you are pretty unlikely to find one unmolested. I'm am very meticulous, especially with my bike(s). |

I have a 2002 M2 with an unmolested license plate bracket that I want to get rid off because I want a smaller more sleeker looking one. |

Well, here's the thing about the 'ugly' stock fender - it works! Keeps all of the crap out of your tail, no moisture intrusion into the electronics back there. That little reflective strip flew off on mine on the trip home from the dealer when I bought my bike. hey 92firebird - ping me for a low profile American Sport Bike tail piece, dirt cheap -
