I have spun my second wheel bearing. Granted I have a high millage bike an M2 with about 73,000 miles. I'm not sure if the previous owner ever replaced any of the wheel bearings I have replaced one set on both wheels. Both of them I have had to locktite a bearing race into the hub so that means when the bearings are shot the wheel is too. Just to satisfy my curiosity I had the guys in the parts department check on new wheels they are obsolete and no stock on hand. For a while we will be able to get away with buying used wheels off Ebay but will that supply dry up as well? Has anyone heard of a conversion kit to put tapered roller bearings in place of the ball bearings? Or is this a problem that won't exist for another 50 years? |

Check with Minneapolis St-Paul H-D. 651lance is the e-bay seller account. They had quite a few new wheels last I heard. |

if you heat up the old bearing with a torch the lock tite will melt and you will be able to put a new one in there. a lot of times the problem is that someone has over torqued the axle. what this does is smashes the spacer and puts a thrust load on the bearing that it was not designed for. a bearing loaded in this manner wont last long. go ahead ask me how I figured this one out. my bearing fell apart and I am lucky I did not crash. |

If you look for CastAlloy instead of "castolite" you may find more profitable results as well. |

Good point Little, I'm good right now. I bought a pair of wheels off craigslist. I'm more concerned with the fleet as a whole not my bike. Sorry that I wasn't clear on that point. I knew the PM wheels were out of production but it surprised me that the castalloy's were also. The problem I see is the castalloy's are going to have a finite service life of maybe 3 bearing changes? (Not sure kind of just guessing) Older wheels that used tapered roller bearings have an unlimited service life unless damaged. I'm not saying don't ride your bikes if we have a problem I suppose PM will build new wheels to service a demand. |

Take the BEARINGS to the LOCAL BEARING SUPPLY in town as they should have them in stock ... Ask for the BEST BEARING off the OEM Bearing Part Number ,,, What causes the bearings to enlarge the wheel hub is the drive belt was or is being adjusted TOO TIGHT !!! DRIVE BELT ADJUSTMENT Class 101, just PM me for a copy ... |

Wanna replace them with a set of low mileage PMs? I have a set from an '02 X1. Bought the bike with 6677 miles, I assume the wheels have that many miles on them. I swapped them for cast powdercoated wheels. PM me if you're interested. |
