Seems like I wrote a thread about this once before...oh,wait.....that's because I did!
The Nasty little c-clip that holds the shift drum detent plate on fractured.....YET AGAIN!!!!!...and damn near left me stranded. Fortunately I was close to home (after almost 100 miles of riding!) and limped home. Same part, same problem. Harley says they aren't aware of a problem, but I sure am! I tried to jerry-rig a better fix using Belleville washers and a snap ring, but it did't work out, so I've reluctantly put it back together with new parts. Confidence is NOT high...with brand-new parts, I can still rock the detent plate on the end of the shift drum, which flexes the clip and ultimately, breaks it. Last time it cracked, this time it broke in half and dripped down off the plate. There's got to be a better way...
* Has anyone else experienced this, or is my M2 jinxed?
* Does anyone know of a fix or retrofit that works (without springing for a Baker six-speed)?
* Is it possible that I have improperly machined or worn parts exaggerating the problem? ('99 M2, 20k) I do not beat this bike...I baby it. This is twice in like 5 years. My confidence level is in the toilet, because when you get stuck in-between gears, you go nowhere. Help me out here.....

I love it when I answer my own questions....makes me feel stupid, yet superior and All-Knowing at the same time:

Pricey, but I see it in my future......

Is there any reason why you can not bolt the OEM PLATE,detent to the OEM SHIFTER DRUM ASM. ???

The spud on the end of the shift drum is dead soft.

Machine the snap ring groove off and drill&tap 10-32, use button head.

Damn! I wish I would've seen this two days ago, before I put it back together!
I assumed it would have been hardened steel. Maybe next spring I'll pull the cover again and have at it. How much clearance is there between the end of the spud and the back of the clutch basket?
