I have a low mileage, less than 10k, X1 and last weekend as I was riding it I realized that the trip odometer had reset on its own back to zero. So while I was riding I switched it over to the regular odometer and then back to the trip odometer a few minutes later for a second to see what was up. As soon as I switched back to the trip meter it reset to zero. I tried this several times throughout the ride and although the rest of the bike is running well this just started and I have not a clue what to look for. Battery is relative new and starts well. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Sounds like the trip meter fuse is bad.

Check your battery and chassis grounds.

I had the ODO switch go bad on my S3T. At first it would reset the ODO on it's own, eventually, it wouldn't do anything.

I picked up a $3 push button switch at Radio Shack and wired it in. Mounted the new switch over on the left edge of the dash, out of sight.

Thanks for the suggestions. I will start with those when I get home today.

mine did the same thing on my 5K mileage bike...as Yo_barry said, mine was a bad switch. Ordered a new one from the dealer and replaced it and its been working great.

Ok now things just got strange. I figured before I checked into the fuses and battery that I would install the x1 shifter conversion first. I installed the shifter kit and it went smoothly. Then on to the fuses and battery. They both look fine.

So I then go to take a ride to see how the new shifter set up feels and the bike will not start. When I put the killswitch on and hit ignition switch I noticed that I did not hear the fuel pump. I turned the key off then back on and no fuel pump sound. I check the fuses again while the key is in the ignition and when I removed the ignition fuse I heard the fuel pump and thought all was cool. I put the seat back on and then try to start it and no fuel pump sound and nothing when I try to start it. I hope I have not opened up a can of worms. Any ideas? Any possibility I messed with something when putting the new shifter linkage on?

It was getting dark and I made sure that the fuses went back in their correct positions but beyond this I have no idea what happened. The last time I rode it, last weekend, it started up just fine and all was good except for the aforementioned trip odometer issue. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.

After not being able to sleep thinking that I truly messed up my bike somehow, it dawned on me to try to start the bike with the kickstand up and eureka! It started in the neutral gear no problem so of course I had to take it for a spin.

I do not know if a fuse was loose or the battery connections were but one of those happen to be the culprit and my trip odometer works just as it used to. Thank you for the suggestions!

Now for my current dilemma being the bike not starting with the kick stand down. I think I had to have knocked something loose when I removed the left hand foot peg to install the new shift linkage. Is there anything that I should look for first that might be painfully obvious to the trained eye? Any page in the service manual to look at? Thanks again for the help and take care.

Kickstand safety switch? Is your kickstand switch wires jumper-ed yet? Try that first. I don't know how it could be related to the odo thing but who knows?

I'm no fan of dis-abling any safety switches.I like WHY they work.

But i'll tell you what you did! You messed around with the fuses/fuse box right?

The "Starter safety interlock" circuit has two DIODES that are DIRECTIONAL (WITH AN ARROW STAMPED) and black and LOOK like fuses. You MAY have reversed one.

Look in the fuse box for the black headed "FUSE" and try reversing one if you messed with it.

Also, if you pulled the fuse box screws and pulled on the fuse box for a better "look-see", then you may have a pin that has slightly pulled out of the fuse block, thereby making and breaking the connection at will.

I had a no-start condition on my '00 X1 Lightning while wringing out the wiring and immediately went back to the fuse block, took the screws out and viola, one wire pulled loose from the lock in the block.

I really hate bow-string tight wiring on anything! Makes it real difficult to troubleshoot.

For some reason when I went to start it up today while on the side stand the fuel pump primed and all was well. Maybe it was just a loose wire or fuse but in the end all is well and works now! Thanks for all the suggestions and help!
