Hey all...a few months ago I picked up a 1999 X1 Lightning with factory pro street exhaust, race ecm and a forcewinder intake. It ran fine for over 1000 miles since I got it but recently it started wanting to stall out and has trouble taking off from start. Bogs out, then all of the sudden it seems OK. Runs good for 10-20 miles then starts cutting out and losing power. Engine cuts out, skips and studders on the highway. I limp home and it starts working fine again before I get into the garage. I wanted to take a look at the diags with ECMSpy, but it's not available anymore. Anyone have the program and files needed for the bike/ecm I have? Thanks for the help, this site is a great source for a new buell owner. I am really itching to get this back up and running, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

"Runs good for 10-20 miles then starts cutting out..." Given your symptoms, I don't think ECMspy is going to be much help if your engine light is not flashing/on. If it were me, I would start with checking all the grounds and wires going to the injectors, fuel pump, spark plugs, and the sensors. |

Have dealt with same problems recently. Engine temp sensor was bad. First, I hope you have a service manual for this bike. Pull your diagnostic plug out from the steering head area. It's a four wire plug and you'll want to have the connector lock in the 12 o'clock position, pull the rubber cap off, then jumper the two right pins together with a small wire with spring clips on the end. If you don't have one, sometimes the guys at RadioShack will help you make one. This will allow you to use your tach CEL light to show which DTC's your bike has logged. Here's how it works. Once you jumper these two pins, turn your key to ignition and your kill switch to RUN. Your CEL light will flash four (IIRC) times, then pause, then flash the first number, then pause, then flash the second number, then any more DTC's in that same order. Make sure you are recording the number of flashes you are seeing. 13 is the Engine Temperature Sensor 14 is the O2 Sensor Easy to replace both. Al and Joanne at American Sport Bike carry what you'll need. Don't let this thread die before you let us know what you've found. |

@Kalali - I kinda figured that...no engine light. I still would like to get a copy to do a TPS reset. It was running a little choppy before the problems started (I wouldn't do this until I figure out the original problem). I replaced the plugs, ordered a fuel filter and drained the gas tank. Waiting for the new fuel filter. As far as checking the grounds and wires...am I just physically inspecting the wires, or can I check them with a multimeter also? Since the problem is sporadic, it seems to point to electrical, but could it be something physical like bad fuel pump, o2 sensor, injector, etc? Can I hook up a fuel pressure gauge and check the reading when it starts to have problems? Just brainstorming...I'm not very strong with troubleshooting electrical problems, not even sure if it is electrical. Thanks for the suggestions. (Message edited by Fergus on July 28, 2011) |

@2Seasons - Thanks...Yes, I have a service manual I will try to see if there are any codes tonight when I get home. Thanks for all the info. I will make sure to keep the post updated, nothing worse than a thread that dies before the solution is posted. |

Check your intake seals--spray Carb Clean or Brake Clean at seals while engine is running---- and make sure the vacuum cap is on the fitting on bottom of your intake or that the vacuum hose going to carbon cannister(if you have one) is not open. Change your plugs.Check to see that your plug wires are not corroded. |

Make sure your tank vent isn't plugged and the hose isn't pinched. When it starts running like crap, pop the gas cap and see what happens. |

I got out to the garage for a few minutes tonight. I ran the trouble codes by jumpering the ECM plug. No codes (flashed solid for 4 seconds, then flashed 11-12 times super fast), looked up on internet and I guess that means there's no codes stored. Checked the cables to the TPS, injectors, fuel pump and plugs. They all look OK. Waiting on the ECM cable. I can plug in when I get the ECM cable and check TPS by wiggling connections and monitoring voltage. Checked the tank vent, it's clear. I did run it w/ the fuel cap loose when I was having problems and it didn't help. Waiting on plug wires and fuel filter from IronMachine. I will gas her up and do some more diags when I get the fuel filter and plug wires (already swapped plugs). Thanks for all the suggestions, standby for updates. Thanks all. |

take a close look at wiring, i've had problems with loose pins inside connectors (recently with the 02 connector), frayed wires as they enter connectors, a fellow x1 owner had problems after 80+ miles , turns out it was the wires between the CPS and ECM. The CPS is a hall effect pickup, which breakdown when hot if they are failing. Sometimes you can see the insulation bubbling with the heat. |
