So at the end of my trip back from the S2 gathering in Christmas MI, my clutch started getting hard to use. This is what I found when I got home and opened up the cover. It is the outer bearing, part #8885, and sits in the pressure plate. Would this be the infamous grenade plate? Do I need a new plate assembly or is the bearing able to be installed into the existing plate if I find no damage to it?

No the grenade plate is a steel 'spring' plate that sits dead center in the middle of your clutch pack.

You would have to pull that out and inspect, a new bearing should fix it. I do not have the parts book in front of me to tell you the right names or numbers.

But the look from the pics it should be an easy fix. But there may be more hidden that you/we are not seeing...

Thanks Spidey. I do have the parts book for the S2 and the S3, maybe someone has the numbers for the corresponding sportster part. I am planning to pull out the clutch as I need to replace the crankshaft seal. I will likely just replace all the clutch plates while I have it out even if there is no apparent damage. The spring plate is #37977-90, is there an updated part #?

The industry bearing number is 6200 and the HD number is 8885

Do you have the tool for installing the new style crank seal? If not, get ahold of Frank, he can mail you mine if you need it when he's done. Then you can just mail it on back to me.

Thanks for the bearing numbers Ed. Looks like the HD number is the same as the Buell number. Brin- I dropped a line to Frank. Thank you, I will get it right back to you when the seal is in. I ordered up a new set of discs and the clutch tool also. I will know soon if i need a new pressure plate as well. And I should probably plan on replacing the other bearing, 36799-91. Do you have the industry number for that one Ed?

"i" had my bearing go out so "i" took it to my local bearing store and got the best and strongest bearing available plus being a sealed one ...

Have a lot more miles on the replacement than the OEM ever had ...

Why would you need a sealed bearing in an oil bath? The trans fluid is going to well lubricate that bearing.

if "i" were to put a "sealed" bearing in an OILBATH "i" would feel that it would ::BE:: a waste of mechanical energy to "spin" the extra """"WEIGHT""" said bearing has.

Clutch class 420 behind the high school in the VW microbus....
