How many of you have actually seen a Baker 6 speed in the wild?

Is it a "plug & play" install on an X1? |

Kalali, you have to cut a relief in the case to give 6th gear a place to live, but other than that it's a direct bolt in.Here's a link to the install instructions: http://www.bakerdrivetrain.com/xl/xl6_instructions .pdf |

I have one, it's pretty nice. I like to keep the rpm low, so it works out well for me. Don't use 6th unless traffic allows about 75+ mph. Some of the lower ratios are slightly changed. It also includes some other Baker improvements, the smooth shift drum, the billet end piece, that are sold separately. So it shifts in general way better than stock, but still it's not as good as a typical Jap bike. I wish I coulda got the gears back-cut before having it put in. I didn't install, being unreasonably terrified of transmissions, it was done by Vallejo Buell (R.I.P.) for about $850 I think. It will fit any tuber, or 5-speed Sportster with the 'cassette' transmission. |

I could not afford the six speed so i had mine custom built by zippers performance. I had a HD Stealer-ship install a smooth shift kit on my X1 and They F'ed up my tranny and it would not shift after 2 days and they would not pay for it. So i learned a hard lesson about HD techs. Once i had the qualified mechanics at Zippers fix it and replace the gears, Then back-cut the gears and set it up and build it for racing. Zippers billet trap door CNC machined from 7075-T6 billet aluminum, This strengthens this critical area and provides rigid support for the transmission shafts. Includes grade 8 mounting hardware, shift drum bushing, main and countershaft ball bearings and circlips installed for your convenience. My brother Used to have a X1 from the movie ghost rider and it already had the 6 speed in it and he would leave me in the dust with that thing!! The tranny build was $1600 after all the goodies if anyone is interested. Edit: Last time i priced out the baker 6 speed it was almost $3000.00 (Message edited by preybird1 on July 19, 2011) |

When the mainshaft bearing locked up on my S1W, I had the gears micropolished while everything was out. Shifts as nice as my 1125 does. |
