I'm doing some serious engine mods (1250 kit, cams, heads, race exhaust) and I'm thinking the clutch is sub par at best. I have no knowledge of the quality or durability of a the stock type clutch so tell me what I should do to rebuild or upgrade without spending major $$$. Looking to spend under $250 for an upgrade. Hydro clutch?? |

I don't think you'd need anything more than a good clutch set up. I ran an Energy One clutch and really liked it. It had a heavier clutch spring in the kit and worked well. I think Barnett's is another good option. |

REmove the grenade plate, replace with 2 steel 1 fiber, Unless you are making tremendous HP the clutch will be ok if the plates are good, if not Fattys' suggestions are as good as it gets. |

I did the exact thing you are doing now m2typhoon. I had to beef up the stock set up as the clutch was slipping at WOT in 5th gear on the dyno. I went with the extra plate kit from barnett performance and i used there race clutch kit. was expensive but works very well and is very sensitive to engagement, You can feel every part of it through the lever range. Here is a link http://www.barnettclutches.com/ |

IMHO, if you remove the GRENADE PLATE(PRODUCT IMPROVED OEM CLUTCH)the OEM Clutch will hold ... If not just put in a stronger CLUTCH SPRING(diaphragm spring) ... After all this is basically what you get when you buy a BIG $$$.$$ after market RACING CLUTCH !!! CLUTCH Class 101, just PM me for your copy ... (Message edited by buellistic on July 08, 2011) |

I did notice a difference in the clutch material from stock to Energy One. The stock plates had smaller squares of clutch material on the clutch plates. The Energy One plates had much more material. They were NOT identical to stock. If there's 25-30% more mating surface material, my dumb thinking would seem to mean better clutch hook up (less slip) or longer life. The clutch engagement felt different as well. I don't think all that difference in feel was just the 20% stiffer spring. I agree, though, that with what you are running, a de-grenade ring clutch pack should do fine. I did buy my EO clutch with compressor tool for $120 on eBay. |

"i" agree a 20% "PRESSURE" increase in the DIAPHRAGM SPRING will make a BIG DIFFERENCE on any clutch ... IMHO, product improving the OEM parts until they have to be AFTER MARKET UP-DATED is the way to go ... |

I finally decided I was ready to replace the grenade plate on my bike, and after finding it difficult to purchase only 2 new friction plates, I decided to buy the Energy One kit that includes the extra friction plates and the extra steel plate. It was cheaper to purchase the Energy One kit with the clutch spring compressor than to buy the friction plates from HD, since the dealer by my house would only sell me the friction plate kit not the individual friction plates. I haven't installed, though so I can't report on how it performs. I just haven't been able to convince myself to go work outside in the garage when it's 105 degF or so... |

Bet if you bought a BIG $$.$$$.$$ DRESSER and ask for the PARTS by individual part number the "STEALERSHIP" would get them for you !!! AFTER ALL THESE PARTS ARE JUST "SPORTSTER" CLUTCH PARTS !!! (Message edited by buellistic on July 08, 2011) |

LaFayette, I wish that worked. Per your advice and others, I purchased the parts catalog for my M2 years ago. Definitely money well spent! I think I just ended up with someone behind the counter that didn't know what they were doing... There's a surprise I bet they would have been more accommodating if I was ordering chrome. |

Honestly, I have experienced more than one parts guy who simply didn't give a shit. I had a Buell customer who wanted JUST the new small frame scoop. I got my ass chewed by the parts guy for "trying to do his job" and "he didn't need my help. Stay the f*ck in sales." I was gone for a couple of weeks and then went in and calmly showed him that this guy had a Cityx. The part he INSISTED only came as a complete kit and couldn't be separated was for a ULY. The scoop he was pointing to wouldn't fit on this guy's bike no matter how hard he tried. Then I showed him the exploded diagram with part number of the 2010 Buell with the SMALL scoop that WOULD fit this guy's 2003 to 2010 SMALL FRAME Buell. Who's the dumb shit now parts guy? Most just don't care enough to even look. Not even for a fellow employee. |
