Last Saturday I got the S1 out and we gassed up and headed out. Rolling through main street I'm last with an X1 and R1 in front of me. Roads about to open up and It's time to show them what a big inch S1 can do, I hit third and roll on just a bit of throttle and the tire lights up. Felt good actually but I knew I had not dialed in that much throttle so I pulled over to have a look. Penske seal blew and totally wet the rear tire! In another few seconds I would have been 100+ through the turns. This is the second time this year a Buell of mine has lubed the rear. Earlier my X1 cam cover gasket blew. I'm thinking belly pan time. Both bikes are well maintained and the oil loss was without much warning. Would a belly pan keep me alive? Any still around for sale?

Last pic shows the diaper I rigged to get to the garage with. It saturated quickly.

First step, get rid of the old Dunlops.

I have a set of those on the M2 for the moment. 'Bout as much traction as a skateboard.

Bummer on the shock, but keep us posted on the rebuild. Be nice to "mentally archive" the process for the time my S1W needs a rebuild : )

Glad you made it home safe!

I have put over 50k on my penske and never have had a leak like that, nor Have I heard of anyone else, so I would venture to say that it is not a common problem! I would have it Rebuilt and be back on your way! You can find a few reputable shock Builders and Tuners in the Archives here! If you do want a Bellypan, I'm sure the company AirTech could fix you up! Other than the problems you already mentioned, The only other problem I could think of that would cause oil on the back tire would be the Crank Shaft Seal! A belly pan would def not help that failure unless you re-routed you Trans Vent line down to it! Oil on the back tire does suck and is very Dangerous! When My Crank Shaft Seal blew I was Riding very curvy roads at a very "Spirited" Pace! I just got lucky! At our Rest Stop for Lunch I noticed the OIl Slick and did my best to clean it up! The Ride Home, I Rode at the pace of a guy on a Moped! LOL! Ride Safe

I was a little bummed but that was overshadowed by not being a crumpled meat sack waiting for the ambulance.

Emailed Penske about turn around time on rebuild.

Agreed! They did stick much better without oil though.

2 mopeds and an old lady on a tricycle passed me getting to the garage. I'm sure the Penske will be fine after service, it's my confidence factor that wants the belly pan.

Yes, good eye son! You win a steak dinner or random Buell part if your ever this way.

Guess I'm just spooked with 2 such events in the same year.

My stock shocked pissed all over FMJ's shop floor and i got a discounted works shock. I had 2 oil filters get loose and oiled the whole bike at 70 mph and that was some scary shit!

I had 2 oil filters get loose

Either 1) put a hose clamp on the filter and tighten it so the screw part hits something if the filter tries to unscrew, or 2) torque the filter properly to begin with. Between my Buells and my FLHP, I've done about 300k miles total...and NEVER had an oil filter come loose.

And I don't use the hose clamp trick either. I just put 'em on right. Apparently.

Let me speak for Preybird on this one.

He had the adapter spin loose actually, I don't know if it was time #1 or 2 when that happened.

His bike was poorly treated by the previous owner too, so it ran rough and eventually led to him totally rebuilding the engine, the excess vibes may have been a factor on loosing the filter as well.

Anyway, he knows his way around vehicles and I expect his situation was out of the norm for most of us. It's actually kinda surprising that he's kept his bike, many have had the sort of problems he's had and tossed in the towel before it got so bad. Russ has stuck with his bike and kept at it, that thing is sweet now!

Regardless though, a slick back tire sucks.

Glad everyone posting here has made it home safe from their various oil spewage situations!
