this question has probably been asked 100X but here goes.... Whats the difference between a buell and sporty engine?? Im guessing pistons, heads, cams.... Are the lower ends the same? If you bolted the above items on a sporty engine would it make the buell hp rating? | ||

Different years, different upgrades. the 95, and I think 96 Buells had a stock Sportster engine. 97 had the lightning heads, and I think lightened flywheels 98 saw the introduction of the thunderstorm heads, hotter cams 99 saw fuel injection added to the mix Not sure of it all, so don't hold it as gospel, I'm sure others will chime in with the correct engine specs through the late 90's. | ||

The XR1200 engine is a STOLEN XB12 engine. It even has the idler pulley. It puts out less power than an XB12 because of bad airbox design. | ||

Natex - the XR1200 engine probably has even less in common with the XB engines than a standard 2004+ Sportster 1200 engine. A 2004 1200 XL is an XB engine with milder cams and a slightly different case/cover (aside from the fueling and exhaust differences). An XR engine uses some fancy new oil-cooled head design that the XBs never had. | ||

the differences between Buell and Sportster engines depends mainly on what year and model Buell you're comparing to what year and model Sportster. In general, they started out using the same engine and as time went on they grew more and more apart. By the end there wasn't much in common anymore. 95-96 Buell S2's like mine have a Sportster motor same everything but with a better air cleaner and exhaust. The 96 S1 had different heads called Lightning heads that would later show up with dual plugs on 1998 XL1200S models. 1996 S1s also had Screamin Eagle bolt in cams which never appeared in any Sportster and also lighter flywheels than any Sportster. These lighter flywheels than sportsters continued all the way to the end as did bigger cams in most models except M2's. Better heads continued though thunderstorm and xb heads until 2004 when the Sportster finally got xb heads. fuel injection came out on buells in 1999 but not until 2007 for sportsters. the big departure from Sportster motors came in 2003 when the xb motor came out. the cases are totally different the crank is different the cams are reversed and a new grind and the transmission has a different shifting mechanism. plus it got downdraft fi. they got farther apart in 2008 when buell moved the oil pump to the cam box cover and also changed the crank again. | ||

"How can you steal something that you own?" OK I was rash and butt-hurt when I said that. I poked around with google and found this picture: http://www.flickr.com/photos/23002423@N06/2673262494/ It's not exactly the same as a 2008-up XB12 engine but you can see the oil pump is in the same orientation and location. You can see that the timing is coming off of the crank up front like the 2008-up Buells too. I have no idea if the cams are the same of if the heads are the same but there are some really close relations between the 2008-up Buells and these XL1200 engines. | ||

ok- well here is what im trying to figure out... Over the winter I am thinking of putting a XB top end and andrews cams on my X1.... therefore Ill have an X1 top end.... So i was thinking of maybe buying a cheap 99-2003 or so sporty and building it up a little with an X1 top end, my spare X1 forks, my X1 PM wheels... etc. | ||

Case mounting points are different from XL to X1. Same base geography, but you can't "drop" an XL case set into a tuber frame. | ||

I believe 2 bolt holes need to be bored bigger for an xl motor to work in a tuber | ||

2 or 4 rear motor mount holes are different diameter between the Sportster and Buell tuber engines. I think the Buell holes are larger. | ||

I think he is talking about taking a Sportster and making a Buell/Sportster using his spare parts. | ||

Yeah, and that can easily be done, save the rear wheel. The rear wheel won't fit without putting a wider swingarm on the bike as well as widening the rear of the frame about 1.5-2". |
