Okay, now that I have your attention.

I'm in the final lap of the rebuild, for a quick recap.

2001 X1 ~50K miles, broke front motor mount, then broke head extracting motor mount bolt. Bought NHRS mount, 1250 kit and stage 2 heads to fix the one broken head . Also upgrade to new oil pump drive gear.

Potentially stupid question: Are the cylinders the same, the kit doesn't mark one front and read, so I'm guessing they are the same

Next question: Do you use anything on the gaskets, Hylomar maybe? I'm talking cylinder base, head and cam cover here.

Any other pointers to be aware of? I have the service manual (I love this statement : the piston pins is a loose fit in the piston and will easily slide out statement on page 3-23). And I've read the NRHS guide, but just want to be sure.

I've done several inline 4s and parallel twins and a triple or two, but this is my first Harley motor.

Thanks
matt

Yes the cylinders are the same, the base gaskets will be orientated by the dowel.

I use a bit of sealant on the base gaskets, a light coat.

You will need to follow your pistons instructions so you know which way the arrow (if there is one) faces.

"Is there such a thing as a dumb question?"

If course not.

What a dumb question.

Sorry - but you left yourself wide open for that.

What Spidey said.
Also be sure to follow the book EXACTLY on the torque sequence and tightness on the head bolts.

No sealant on head or rocker gaskets, use the new type gaskets with the metal core.

Glad to hear im not the only one to do that. was able to weld the cracked bolt boss and get back on the road, so happy ending after the drinking/cussing fit.
hope your rebuild goes smooth.
And YES their is such a thing as a stupid question. we get a allot of tourist's up here (Alaska) and they come armed with a Bunch of really stupid questions.
"do you take american money?"
"What lake is that?" (they came in on a cruse ship! ummmm The Pacific Lake)
and my personal favorite, not a question but a fantastic statement said to my wife.
"You speak english soooo well!"

Psykick,

That is some funny stuff Love the Pacific "lake"!

glad to hear you recovered from the bolt break in a less trying manner. I may see if the head can be welded just to have an extra set lying about.

the welder at the machine shop was able to weld it without a problem. and he made the mating face larger for a larger contact area.
the only thing i had to adjust was to lap the mating surface, head/attach brace.
only charged $40 and almost hugged me when he saw their wasnt a broken "Easy-Out" in the hole.
speaking of that I want to start a class action law suit to change the name of "Easy-Out". CUZ IT AINT!!!!!!!
