Okay. I know that There is a guy that will make a custom metal tank for $2000 for my bike. I have a thing against Plastic parts on a motorcycle. I believe they do not belong. I want a steel tank. Has anyone ever seen or modified an S3T tank to fit on an X1? I understand you would have to modify the tank to accept a fuel pump and modify the end to be the same as the X1 Tank... Seems better to do it this way then spend $2000 on a custom Tank... any thoughts? comments? experiences? Here is the $2000 Tank

If you use the tank from a 99+ S3 it will already have the pump in it. |

S3's have a plastic tank. 99 and up S3's have fuel pump just like an X1's already in the tank. I have seen Manta tanks on X1's so it can be done, I think the seat would need work to fit right. |

What are you trying to gain by putting an S3 tank on the X1? |

Well I was mis informed. I thought S3 Tanks where Steel? Is it only the S1 that has a steel tank? Heres the link to the guy that makes that tank http://www.wilcoxmetal.com/usa.htm What I am trying to Gain is a Metal Tank. Not Plastic. That is my end Goal. |

Holy crap that is a pretty part! I want to settle down and raise a family with that tank! It would be a crime to paint that. |

No S1's, M2's, S3's, or X1's had a stock steel gas tank... |

My X1 still has the original factory cast iron tank. |

That shure is perty! But you can find entire motorcycles for less money. Unless you're building a show bike, I don't see the point. |

yea... though it is probably hand formed, it had better be stainless at that price. Or at least aluminum. |

I'm not a metal fabricator but to me that tank looks unfinished. The seams look too crude. For 2Gs I would expect something like what the guys at Orange County Choppers or West Coast Choppers would make. Maybe those guys charge a lot more... |

With all due respect... and remember I'm saying with all due respect. Kalali. You are nuts. There is not a single seam to be seen on any of the tanks he has posted on his website. Those are absolute perfection. Any seam you think you are seeing is just a reflection off the tank. And the fact that you compair that to the hacks of those two other builders I'm sure would be more than slightly offensive to this guy. |

Dude, what seams? That tank is a work of art. |

Obviously no offense was intended. And of course I'm sure a lot of effort went into forming all the pieces, etc. So maybe then it's just how the picture was taken and/or I need to get my eyes examined but I'm just saying what "I" see. When I look at the picture posted here (not seen the website) I see a weld seam along the side right where the top half and lower half meet. I also see a seam around the edge where the side piece seems to be "tucked" under the top piece. As for the other "hacks", while I do't particularly care for their style (and taste), I still think they are pretty good metal fabricators. 'nough said. |

Actually there are a few ways that tank would be made, however none of them would involve mating tank halfs top to bottom. What I see, as my experience of making tanks, is that the entire top piece is a single formed piece, then mated to a bottom roll pan for the seal. The other way to do it, would be 70% of the top be one large piece with a Y tab on the front as the front of the tank, that would then be folded down and mated. The seams would easily be hidden with some welds, grinding and polish. Last way, but most likely the most labor intensive way, would be form the tank as two sides, and made them left and right down the middle. But I highly doubt any one in their right mind would go about it that way. |
