Anyone still tracking their tubeframe Buell? I haven't found posts since 2009 - I am new to the site though.
At the track, I'm dragging the shifter on the left and brake lever on the right, with my correct preload in the rear. Anyone had this issue?
Any tips on maintaining durability at the track? I haven't had trouble but the bike has 22,000 miles on it - great bike.
Thanks!

I'm sure there are folks on here who still hit the track. I've never gone fast enough to have that issue. I don't have that kind of skill yet!

My pegs hit long before my shifter or brake lever. You getting off the bike enough? Might be time for some rearsets if so. If you're going to be tracking it a lot you'll probably want to replace the oil pump drive gear with the high performance one and remove the spring/grenade plate in the clutch.

If you are still running stock footpegs, you WILL ALWAYS drag!

I put Banke controls on my S3 - I think he still sell them. Moved UP about 2.5 inches and BACK about 3.

You really cannot run stock footpeg and control positions. Yeah, I don't RACE my S3 but I put the rearsets and reverse shift so I didn't short-circuit my brain when going from the XB racebike to the S3 streetbike. (though HAVE taken the S3 to the track a few times)

Sometimes I'm hanging off this much to avoid getting bucked by the levers! I'm in the rear.

14d, do you have rearsets? Are you able to get your knee down?

Thanks!

Does this brake lever look like it is adjusted too low? Probably if you guys are hitting the pegs first. I though about bending both levers in, plus adjusting them up. Thanks!

can't say for sure as I don't have an X1 but your brake lever sure looks low to me! & as others have mentioned if you are going to be at the track allot, rear sets would be a good investment!

No, I'm running stock location with millennium pegs and the updated shifter linkage. I'm probably running my levers a little higher than most, I tend to ride with the ball of my foot on the pegs. I've gotten my knee down a few times but haven't been to a track yet. Most of the time I try and have more self control (or preservation) on the street. One of these days when I have the money I'll go do a track day. Unfortunately the bike is pretty low on the spending list right now and work has been dead.

Thanks guys for all the posts! I'll probably be shopping for some rearsets then.
I hear you 14d about the self control. I got married 6 months ago and we just found out we'll have a baby in 8 more, thanks be to God! So I should probably think about toning it down a bit.

This pic shows a decent shot of what comes close to the ground.
Thanks!

I've got two X1 Lightnings.

Was wondering about track days myself.

Welcome to BWB.

I track race mine. I have also taken a few race schools on the X1. In your pics you are not off the bike enough. You need higher foot pegs to really get down low. My biggest problem was that i was afraid to really go low enough. It takes a few times out to get some technique down. Your head needs to be more outside of the bubble. If you look at your pic, you are in line with the bike and you need to be off it way more and then you can take the corners without having to lean the bike so far. When i did one of my first race schools it was all about technique and positioning. I was learning And this guy on a CBR1000 went whipping by like he was some pro racer and he went down hard on the next turn. When we got back to the class room he was asked what happened and to try and explain it. He was to hot on the throttle and was not doing any maintenance throttle. he was Just trying to rip it up like he was a pro.

One more thing....STREET TIRES ARE NOT RACE TIRES!! They will never get hot enough to achieve the right traction for racing on the track. Some people will argue this but it is true.

Preybird, thanks for your note. In the picture above, with the 4 bikes, am I off the bike alright? This was after a bit of instruction.
What do you guys recommend for a good street tire that also does, lets say, 2 track days per year?

That is much better. Your brake pedal is normal height. It is really surprising how hard it is to be smooth on the track. It's not so easy! I also had\have clip on handle bars on the bike.....I do not recommend these!! I would stick with club man bars if your going to change them up. The one thing i did regret was putting on the clip-ons. I hate them and they are coming off soon. I have a full race suspension set up also.
here is a brake reference pic

Here is the front for springs..Hyper-pro progressive springs and gold valve kit

Here are the clips-ons mocked up.

HUGE difference on the handle bars.

here is a link to my first race track school ever. I kinda suck and the course is a technical kart track. Not really a high speed track but pretty challenging also.

I haven't been on the track for a few years but the second thing I did to my X1 (after a decent rear shock) was to fit rear-sets. Watch out for the sidestand too. I shaved the rubber stop down as far as I could to allow a little more angle.

I loved using the X1 on the track and never felt as comfortable on my XB12R.

I've got rear sets (Buell Race shop deals) the Buell Race Dept. shock mount (raises the rear end ~1"), cut-down aluminum footpegs, and S2 touring peg mounts turned upside-down to get another 3/4" clearance. It still dragged footpegs and the shifter on occasion, and that's hanging off as far as anatomically possible. I may be getting a spring made as the stock progressively wound spring on this Showa seems to settle in a bit too much.

My side stand drags even in spirited street use. Best to take it off for the track.

It's a great track bike. You'll never be the fastest guy at the track, but people are always impressed that such a bike can move so well. Mine only feels like a pig when transitioning from one side to the other.

I've also found it to be very tough, with minimal damage after a highside that landed it on every possible surface. I had it fixed up better than it was for about $400.

if you want to ride an X1 on track you need a better rear shock. I got an used Ohlins: night and day!!!

I used to drag shifter, footpegs and the kickstand even when dragging knee.

I got the buell rearsets and now only drag the kickstand on the S1.

You could work on your form and lean more of your upper AND lower body more to the inside. This will allow you to use less lean angle for the same speed corner. Ask an instructor at your track day to follow and comment.

Thanks for the comments guys - great input.
I contacted Banke and apparently they no longer have access to X1 rearsets. It looks like I have some work ahead of me in several areas if I want to ride the X1 well at the track. I'm tempted to just get an 1125. I would really miss the sound of my X1 though. I'd have to keep it.

The mount

 Buell RACE ONLY shock mount

It's nothing pretty; just a stocker that's been cut with the eye relocated.

I have an aluminum lowering mount that I modified to stock height that I may have welded into a raised mount in the future. It's too pretty and too light to get rid of.

Thanks Preybird. Most don't appreciate her simple, cost-effective style.

should I get the 8 or 9 plate clutch kit for my X1? Will they both fit?

Get the 9 plate. Yes it will fit but you need to remove the center spring plate. If you want to do it on the cheap just buy the extra plates and add them. But the kit Al sells is sweet and i trust a barnett clutch far more then the factory HD stuff.

You guys know of any threads about replacing the oil pump drive gear that 14d spoke of?
It sounds like that is my most pressing job.

There was a recent post about a guy wanting to buy a 2000 x1 and wanted to know what to look for. Some of his advice was to search in past threads. Is there a simple way to do that rather than getting into each "archive" and searching each of those pages? Thanks!
