anyone build a custom single seat tail for their X1? I keep thinking about it but wanted to see what others have done. I love the look of a short tail with the rear tire hanging out back. I know there is a single seat tail made for $1000 or some, im looking for something custom and homemade that flows with the rest of the bike....

Marc,
I've been watching your posts and I like what you are doing with your X1. I'm in the process of getting my X1 back on the road and plan to do make a few similar changes.

Is the shortened tail you mentioned for $1000 (actually $1200 now) from the Speed of Color X1?

here's the part:

They have some cool stuff, but I think for that price + shipping I'm going to build something myself.

Keep up the good work on that X1. Looking good.

Thanks a bunch.

Yes, that is the short tail im thinking of.

I was thinking of maybe making one that is more tubular like the frame.... not sure yet.

I've been thinking about this for a while too. This is another one Speed of Color sells. It would not be too hard to fabricate something like this.

Others on the site mention the RRC tail section. Looks like that's the same.

Speed of Color retails the RRC tail section.
I had made the exact copy of the RRC tail for a little more than half of that price.
this is my tail...

we made 5 tails from an artisan and the final price with the seats was 550 euro each tail, but 4 moths of waiting.
if you order from RRC, you most likely have to wait 1 to 2 moths to have it done.

Thanks Edoardo.
So is that tail section aluminum, steel or is it a cover over tubing?

I did the RRC tail myself... After tons of looking at pictures online and trying to come up with something myself to save some coin I bit the bullet and ordered one. I have (very) limited skills and thought by the time I hacked something up myself that looked bad or paid someone to be their tester I would be better off to just order one. The cost of the tail vs the overall price of the bike seems like a bad financial decision but one should never confuse bikes with investments. BTW the fit and finish on the tail is great, everything bolted right up.

Grant,
the X1 doesn't have any tubes under the tail section, but the frame that you see, which unbolt the stock one and replace with this short one. it is made in aluminum.
Purpony,
what kind of details you want? pictures or you want me to tell you more details about this project?

agreed. I cant say anything about actually making the seat from a scratch seat pan, but It would not be too hard to make a tail to imitate that.
