Hi, I've decided to convert my ignition system to single fire on my '98 M2. So I've been looking at the Ultima single fire kit, but what ECM can I use together with this kit? Can I use the Buell race ECM?

That system takes the place of the ignition module (ECM...but it isn't really an ECM, it's just a timing module). The new one's all mounted in the cam plate. Unplug your stock ignition module, abandon the wires in place, hook up the new stuff right from cam plate to coil, there should be a lead for tach signal, and feed it power/ground...and go ride. Trying to remember...'98...speedo cable off front wheel? Or digital odometer fed by the ignition box? If it's digital, leave your computer plugged it so it can run the gauges. Otherwise...yank it, it's just extra weight |

Thanks, Ratbuell So what you're saying is that I can get rid of the stock ECM?? Hm...I starting to like this! Yes, the '98 have the speedo cable off the front wheel. My bike was one of those without even a tach, but the tach cable is there. Thomas |

Yep, with an analog odometer, the ONLY thing your ignition box does is...ignition timing and spark advance. I did this on my '96 FLHP with an Evo motor. Just pulled the stock timing cup, replaced it with the nose-mounted electronics, pulled the wires, hooked 'em up, and rode. It was a fat pig, so I just left all the stock stuff in place and bundled it out of the way since I wasn't worried about weight. |

May I ask why going through the time and expense to make the switch? What are the benefits? Thanks. |

IMHO, all the FUEL INJECTION models after 1998(except the M2's)are single fire !!! Up to 1998 all models were DUAL FIRE ... On a FULL BLOWN RACE ENGINE it is just another edge to get that last little bit bit out of the engine ... If you can not TUNE what you got, spending money on GO FAST parts just makes your engine run just a little better for BIG $$$$$.$$ ... |

Kalali, you can read about the benefits here: http://www.nrhsperformance.com/tech_singlefire.sht ml Regarding time and expense it really doesn't matter. Its not that expensive and the time doing this is quality time!

Got it. I didn't realize it is the same thing as "no waste" spark which is the way the X1 coil/ECM operates. |

Just make sure you shop around as prices vary and some do not have the necessary rev range for Buells,Crane made good ones as did Screaming Eagle, and Dyna, and there are 2 ways to do it.Replace the nosecone trigger unit and do some wiring or just swap boxes. I used the Dyna 2000 ones on my tubers and loved them. Took about 5 minutes to swap. Need a single fire coil as well. |

Firemanjim, Yes, I've noticed that the prices vary some. I think I'm going for the Ultima-kit as pictured above. The module itself is made by Dyna and relabeled, but the single fire coil is made in china. $145 on eBay for the whole kit, so I think it is worth a try
