This weekend I was out for a ride a few miles away from home and my 2000 X1 died and started freaking out on me. When I turn the key to the middle position, the red engine light comes on and the digital numbers on the mileage clock flicker. As soon as I turn the key to the ignition position, the lights come on, but the fuel pump does not kick on and I get no power to the start button. I've charged the battery and checked the battery cables and they all seem fine, fuses are all functioning also. Anyone with diagnostic suggestions please chime in, I don't want to miss anymore of this amazing riding weather. |

Check the battery again. It may not be "holding" the charge & X1's hate having bad batteries. Next, check all the ground straps for good contacts/tightness and the battery hookups. After that..... Check relays, fuses, the fuse box connections.(The fuse box on X1's has been known to cause electrical problems.) That's all I've got! Chris C |

Check the wires at the back of the key cylinder and trace them back to the connector (about 8 to 10 inches) and make sure none of them are loose. I would be riding along and it would just die. I figured out that if I just reached in behind the fly screen and adjusted the wires it would come back on. |

Pull out the ignition switch and see if you have any burnt / browned wires. The ignition switch can develop an internal short (I've had 2 go out on me). |

Yeah, what Sloppy said also. I've got a rocker switch in place of the key cylinder. |

Wiggle the key a bit and see if it clears up. If so, you need a new switch. Al at americansportbike.com sells aftermarket ones that are supposedly better than OEM, and cheaper too. I too have bypassed my ignition switch. |

Thanks for all the help guys. I went back over a few things this morning and seem to making steps in the right direction. The battery is at full charge and all connections and fuses appear to be functioning. The bike tries to start, but the fuel pump is still not kicking on. Gonna go over it a bit more this afternoon and may have to bring it to my Mech as my patience doesn't like to be tested. |

To follow up on Britchri's post. Not only the ground straps from the batter to the frame but from the frame to the swing arm as well. Check that flat braided piece that goes from the frame to the swingarm block. A loose one of those will cause some weird actions... |

"BELIEVE IT OR NOT" one of them is it will make you clutch cable at the lever "SMOKE" and get "HOT" !! |

WOW! I had time to go through the bike today and found that the ground wire to the frame under the seat near the fuse box was broken and wreaking havoc. Quick and easy fix, now she's good to go. Thanks for all the suggestions guys, greatly appreciated. |
