im a little bit paranoid about my bike but who isnt? anyway, i keep hearing this ticking like noise and i cannot figure out exactly where its coming from or what it is, it has to be engine related as it stays consistant with my rpms, my buddy has a sporty and says its the valves, and that the motor just has loud valves, im wondering how loud the valves should be and if it could be a timing issue...

any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks

without hearing it its kinda tough to diagnose. Pushrods maybe? Mine makes all kinds of noise, but at idle it sounds solid. They are very noisy motors

Its normal to sound like a blender full of ball bearings.

Rattles or knock's, you may have a problem.

A "LONG" screw driver makes a good noise finder ...

Put the handle up to your ear and touch around on the engine surface looking for noise ...

the forcewinder intake on my X1 introduced me to a lot of scary and perfectly normal sounds.

With my head down next to the filter, I can actually hear a "gasping" sound every time a cylinder draws in the intake charge.

That is why if you put the FORCE in the AIR BOX it makes less noise and you can ride in the rain ...

sounds like a paint can being shaken, is a better way to describe it, and coming from a 80's 450 suzuki which let me know instantly by sound if there was something wrong with it the throaty growl the buell makes is still strange to me

Yeah, that'd be like moving form a sewing machine to the sound of a rock crusher.

Could be tappets. Are you running synthetic oil? Tappets will be louder if you are. Does the noise die down after a couple of minutes? If not, probably not the tappets.

Snowbees, your reference to oil confused me: Mobil1 is a synthetic, and you mention using a mineral oil. Can you please clarify? I'm slow (no coffee yet).

I have lots of engine work done to my bike and some SE.536 cams and it makes so much more noise after the cams were installed. But i also had smaller diameter stemmed valves installed. But i can hear the cams a lot! They have there own sound and it travels thorough the push rods, It is very noticeable.

Fahren, sorry , yes mobil 1 v-twin oil is synthetic, the fuchs (silkolene)v-twin i use at the moment is mineral .
just use quality oil, it helps the ticking in my opinion.
