I just got my kit.
I haven't looked at everything closely yet but will the new set up keep the little "running" light?
BTW, I'm assuming X1 and M2 have the same headlight, right?
Is there a lot of cutting/splicing needed?
The directions (from their website) make it sound pretty simple....

After reading their manual, you should know that if you're cutting/splicing then well...you're doing it wrong, lol.

I don't see why it wouldn't keep it, you aren't disconnecting it at all.

There is no cutting or splicing, its simply changing the bulb and connecting the wires to the bulbs power socket. Everything has its own connector, nothing to get crossed up.

On the XB's you have to cut a small hole in the rubber grommet behind the headlight bulb to run the wires, but I do not believe that is an issue on most of the tubbers.

Well, then the headlight housing on the X1 must be different from M2. I have two issues: First, the hole in the housing is not large enough to allow routing all the connectors from the HID bulb out to the harness. Second and more importantly, the back black housing does not have enough clearance for the taller HID bulb. I got the whole system wired up on the bench (without the black headlight housing) and it works perfectly.
Froggy, in my kit all the connections to the main lighting harness is outside of the headlight housing. There is no way to leave the little bulb back in there with the HID bulb.
I don't know. May be I got the wrong kit unless the M2 headlight housing is not the same as X1 and I did read their instructions but I'm still having all these issues.
On the bench it looked awesome...
So you guys claim there is no cutting/splicing involved in this...Not for me.
I need a drink....

Kalali,

Yes, X1 headlights are different from an M2, no idea why they had that little pilot light in there, but the M2's do not.

Anyways, I would just unplug it and cap off the plugs for that little bulb that way the plug from the bike's harness for the H4 bulb will be outside of the headlight making it easier to run the lines.

Now, the problem you're having with the grommet thingy will be taken care of since it is attached to the wire you will be taking out. But will leave the hole "unsealed."

The whole little halogen bulb burning with the HID will look funny anyways (think two different colors of light, yellow and white).

So, what you could do, and what I may end up doing, is now that the the only wires running out of the headlight are the high beam for the HID, and then the positive and negative hookups to the ballast from the bulb.
But, now you have that hole that isn't sealed. I have just left it open for now, and may or may not put some silicone or something in it to seal it. I haven't decided.

Wilson,
Thanks for the input. Appreciate it. I can work through the wiring part and get it to work but my main show stopper issue is the headlight housing not fitting back on with the taller HID bulb. Either the OEM housing between the M2 and X1 headlights are different or the previous owner replaced the unit altogether eventhough it fits perfectly in the OEM bracket. Mine has no Buell logo and the headlight is Bosch. I'll try to post pictures and show what I mean.
Anyone with an X1 done this conversion successfully?

I'm assuming that the headlight you have is the one that "snaps" together? Where you have to pry the headlight portion out of the black bucket? I have one of those as well and couldn't get it to seat either, but then again the entire assembly wouldn't fit the M2 because it was too deep and would hit the frame when trying to attach to brackets.

The bucket does snap into the housing and there is a little screw on the bottom edge that secures the bucket to the housing. Well, sadly I had to give up on the upgrade and sent it back. The DDM guy said a few people had to return the unit because of clearance issues with the taller HID bulb not fitting inside the housing. He suggested a low beam unit which does not have the magnet assembly at the back of the bulb...

Kal:
remove the bucket, take a wooden block and
a hammer and "stretch the steel" of the bucket, Try Xenon link for the lamp (bixenon) Frogs, I had to rewire for the bixenon, an 1125 or xb should be plug & pray. with the magnet and moving lamp its not, and Kal I kept the running lamp

I could not find the writeup so heres the short version,

remove tank and seat
run power from battery to Hi/LO relay in trunk
run power lines for balast to front of bike
I used the opposite side from the main harness,
run relay control from light socket ( in front I moved mine to the rear and taped it up )I wired to the h4 plug for Hi and lo only,
I picked up relay ground in the trunk,
I picked up Balast ground on the front cylinder head right side of rocker box
all wires end on right side of tree,
I fitted the hi lo module to glass and checked the fit in the steel shell,
I opened the wire hole in the shell up and got a groument that fit it
I re-wired the park lamp,to the instrument lights
I made a heavy bracket for the new balast and attaced it to the shell of the headlight to place the balast where it needed to be to allow the lead wires to tuck in behind the shell.
I routed the wires and assembled the shell and bracket I used rubber bushings to mount with and red lock tite on the bolts, the provided bracket is too light I made a steel stiffner and rivited them together

you can't alter the highvoltage lines to the lamp, the mini balasts have an external ignightor I fastened it under the balast and looped the wire lead around the mount and down to the module,
The initial install used the bigger 3x3x1 ballast that worked ok till the ballast got dodgy
I purchased an ilcheapo from mountain lights (junk) I purchased a replacement ballast on line thru amazon, and had my card # stolen later.

the later mountain lights lamp and coil were longer and I had to pound a dimple in the rear of the housing, in hind site, If this ballast craps out any time soon I will go back to xenon link pay more get the bigger better balast and kit, and be done with it, the mountain lights relay failed at night and caused a hairy ride home (light no light) the lamp had a black spot in the beam due to poor aim it flickered because the magnet was sloppy,

as a note the Xenon link unit failed to move after 2 or 3 years of use and several weeks on the work bench, so the low beam is the only beam.

I plan on replacing the capsule and trying again
I think that I will by a car kit and have spares,
I wont be do ing the 1125s yet Till next year then only the lows, as the X1 has a switch that I put in to turn the light off ( emergency restart ) between the battery and the ballast
and I will not alter the 1125 harness in any way,
I have a power cable run to the front that I could fuse higher( I should uses better wire )
but I will not have a restart switch on the 25 so the highs will stay as they are.

Jim, appreciate taking the time for the writeup. To be honest, I hardly ever ride the bike after dark so the upgrade was more of a nice thing to have. I also got to confess that the HID light "color" somehow did not go with the character of the X1. It just looked too "modern" for an otherwise classic looking bike. Of course this is purely a personal taste.
Anyway, I put everything back together and all is well.

Here are the best I can do for photos. I think I need to raise it a tad.

Low

High

It makes a huge difference on High! I mean, I can see forever I swear! I want to run it on high all the time. F the cagers, they'll see me better, right?
Back to riding.

blinding people approaching you is a less than intelligent action. a blinded driver is not less likely to be a danger to an oncoming moto. also, many of us drive trucks, cars, buses, as well as our bikes. i am not less of an enthusiast because i also drive a car. so saying "fuch cagers" is unproductive and unfair. a lot of folks already hate us, so giving them additional reasons (blinding lights, loud exhausts, "up yours" attitudes and behavior, etc.) only stokes the fire
