hello everyone
just entered the world of buell motorcycles in june of this year, finally got around to getting on here, mostly because im having some issues with my new baby, a 2000 X1 with about 16.5k on it

ive looked around on here a bit and found a few different opinions on it and have decided to pick up a forcewinder this weekend, that seems like it should be a pretty easy install, but will i have to putz about with the ECM in it? which by the way i am unsure of where to get the program for my PC of that.

2nd is the actual problem, the rear shock is no longer servicable, talked to the last owner and he said that he replaced it with a used one with 5k on it last spring, great news there right... my question to all of you is that im wondering if it is worth the money to go all out and get the penske for it or if there are better options, eventually i plan to get the bike built up so i will have it for the long run, but part of the issue im having now with the shock is my being large and fat, at 6'5" and 325 im about as big as the bike can take, the guy i spoke with at penske was confident that he could deliver me a shock that could handle me and a passenger. sorry that this pic kind of sucks, im trying to get a better one off of my phone soonish

Welcome to badweb. That is a nice color bike. Your bike reminds me of my stock bike and all the stuff i have done to my bike. I would say it is worth it to upgrade the shock(I have a works) Now......Is it worth the extra money for a penske? I think it is not worth the trouble or the money as you would never use all the fancy features of that high end of a shock. Unless you are a racer or do track days.

If you do the force winder you are better off doing\using the XB rocker box conversion to keep all the oil and crap out of your motor. But that is just what i would do. Doing the mod will also remove the lower rocker box section along with the umbrella valves and saving you a gasket replacement.

thing with the works shocks is that i couldnt find one with a spring that could handle more than a 250lb rider...

I had a custom spring added for mine, All you have to is call them and tell them how much you weigh and they will build it! I had to wait 2 weeks for mine to be built! They fabricate all the parts in house and build the shock in house as well. Call them or have a dealer call them for you and get what you want. I ordered a 250lb+ spring to accommodate my girlfriend one the back also.

Some badwebbers have rebuilt there stock shock. So it can be done....you just need the info.
Ehem anyone? I don't know how to do it but some one who has done it will be along soon!

Penske is worth it. Russ, there are two versions of the Penske, he doesn't obviously need the high and low speed dampening version.
I paid $800 shipped for my brand new Penske from Traxxion, set for me. It was only $50 more than the fully adjustable Works from American Sport Bike.

Just saying, but I'm partial...

I went with the fully adjustable works because i got it for cost! And i use all the adjustments and actually i had the suspension professionally tuned for my riding habits.

I had corporate suspension tune it for me.

Rich a Works or Penske is worth it.
Regarding the Forcewinder, they look and work fine on the X1's.
You may want to get a set of the lower tank inserts to clean up the looks when you remove the air box on the right and intake on the left. Al at American Sport Bike has them in CF and fiberglass.
If you need a TPS reset or anything just bob over to the Crisis Center (my garage) and I'll do it for you. Takes about 5 minutes.
I'm less than 45 min from you in Maple Grove.
If you decide to do the rocker box conversion (very advisable)we can do that as well. Adds about 1 hour to the task. No big deal on an X1.
It would be neat to meet another old schooler in our area.
I work cheap, BEER!

Let me know if I can help.

Brad

Welcome to the madness Rich and nice looking bike. The Crisis Center (Brad's Garage) has saved my bacon more than once. I moved to Minneapolis about 3 years ago and was impressed with the tight group of Buellers up here.

on your questions
if you dont alter the exhaust you do not need to alter the ecm,

if you do a slip on and the force winder,
its not essential, but recomended

A comment from a big guy, watch the rubber mounts ( isolators or Isos ) being that you are right at the bikes weight limit
they will not last quite as long as normal ( thats an odd term for here hehe ),

pay particular attention to the front one.
if it starts failing at short intervals replace all asap,

check the mounting bolts for the brackets on the heads pre and post ride a glance is all that is needed, Failure here is serious but fixable, as your time and finnances permit, consider replacing the cast bracket with the billet part that American sport bike sells, AL is a resource here and worthy of your business.

the Great news is that belt and isolator service on the X1 is the easiest of all of the tubers including the S2,

I have met Brad (bluesM2) I would take him up on the offer of assistance, hes very knowledgable and hey Beers' cheap!

and welcome to the madness,

Welcome aboard!

If you haven't found them already, talk to Al and Joanne at American Sport Bike (just click the name and it'll link you to their page). Tell them your weight and your bike (and your budget), and they can hook you up with the "right" shock.

I own both a Penske, and a Works. Penske is a used one I bought (fresh rebuilt) off a race team, and it's on my S1W. Probably more shock than I need on a street bike, but the price and timing were right and my stock shock was a pogo stick.

I have a triple-adjust Works on my S2 and love it. I like all the adjustments because it puts it near my Uly for versatility - I can set it where I need it whether my bags are empty or full, solo or 2-up.

Check with Al. I'm willing to bet he can get you a Works with a spring set for your weight.

I would upgrade the shock! And the XB12 rocker box conversion is worth it!

well i ordered my forcewinder and shock this morning, that hurt my wallet alot... the guy at works was really helpful and figured out with me what i needed and how much it would be, it may take a little bit longer since he has to get the spring from eibach to support my 330lbs of largeness, so that should be all good when i finally get it...

question about the xb rocker box upgrade... that is something that i can do at a later date correct? because after the shock and the forcewinder all the modification that i will be able to afford will be small things that i can create from stuff at the hardware store... hahaha but i am excited to get my forcewinder on.

the previous owner had the ECM tuned way down for fuel economy, does anybody have a copy of ECMspy they can send me and the fuel maps to pump my x1 up?

thanks

You can do the xb rockers later, but you will have to decide how you want to deal with the routing of your breather tubes with the Forcewinder. You can route them into the Force so they dump back into the intake, or you can plug that hole in the Force and route them to a catch can or daylight. This is what you will also have to decide with the rocker box conversion, so start researching now and think about what solution works for you.

that project can wait. (but might be worth it) First you need to understand how the breathers work and what they do and your oil level. It is just how a Harley engine works; but engines in general. (don't over fill, that is where it will come out of). Search topics related to "breathers", "puking", "blow by" also search the X1 Files
http://www.saintjohn.nbcc.nb.ca/marriott/x1/

many people use a catch can and just check it every so often.

Now that you got the rear shock setup for you, winter time you should start looking at getting the front end done as well.

a standard FW can be used, the bolt holes in the throttle body must be re-tapped 1/4" x 20

you just have to deal with the sensor and wiring for the oat (outside air temp) sensor (not major) banjo bolts or re routed breather vent lines to a can / filter or just overboard
skip the force aluminum breather bolts

got my works today!
must have scared the hell out of the little UPS guy, huge guy answering the door with a chew in and almost shouting in excitement. slapped it on and put on some serious miles, its like a totally different bike! im so happy i went with that shock.

had a big goofy grin on my face all day, the bike seems to hook up so much better, nothing like a 330lb man doing 120 on two wheels to turn some heads.

there will certainly be alot of tinkering this winter to make it faster and more better. haha

anybody from MN ever been to sport wheels in jordan? think id have any luck finding an intake and the carbon fiber tank accents there?

thanks
Rich
