I got home from the Stealership this morning gettin stuff for the Road King and found oil all over my primary from my trans breather on my S1. Opened the derby cover and oil poured out. All together there was 16oz of engine oil in my primary. The bike has 24K on it. What else should I replace since I'm in there anyway? Does a Sportster use the same seal driver so that the Stealership won't look at me like an alien when I try and buy a Buell tool? |

Use a big freakin' socket and a rubber mallet. I'd check your primary chain for stretch or binding points. Check your clutch pack, and your primary adjusting shoe. That's about all that's in there, really. Unless it stinks like bad differential fluid. If it's *really* nasty smelling - like, smells like death - your stator is on the way out. |

It's a good time to check the torque on your starter bolts. |

Better yet, change the starter gasket while you are in there. The paper one WILL start to leak. Make sure you have the updated primary adjuster a mentioned above. Make sure the pins on the shift drum haven't started backing out.. Brad |

The new style detent plate is a nice upgrade, and is very reasonably priced. |

If you don't already have the updated primary chain tensioner, that old style is a bomb waiting to go off. (Message edited by reepicheep on August 16, 2010) |

Hoot, What improvement will the new style detent plate provide? I already replaced the starter gasket and am trying to McGyver together a Clutch spring compressor to get the Grenade plate out before it does the suicide bomber routine. The new style Primary Adjuster is another must do. |

Eric, Sent you an e-mail on the compressor, not sure it went thru. If you didn't get it, let me know. |

The new detent plate has a different profile, and is supposed to make shifting esaier/smoother. I believe it is a $5 part, but it has been a few years since I purchased one. |

That WAS easy! Buell used to have part numbers like that until they changed over to their new system. It looked like an old Buell part number to me. So I saved you some time at the parts counter Fatty! (Message edited by hootowl on August 16, 2010) |

A daub of silicone (RTV oil resistent, for example) up where the stator wire exits the primary case. It passes through a rubber grommet, and can and often does leak there. Easy preventative maintenance, since you are right there anyway. Have a shift shaft seal on hand to replace the current one if it gets messed up in the process of opening things up. Another cheap part to have at the ready. |

Aye. You may want to wrap some electrical tape around the splines on the shifter shaft prior to installing the primary cover in order to protect the seal. It is easy to tear, especially if it is the old one being reused. |

The seal is cheap to replace. I put in a new one and slid a plastic bag over the splines and slit the seal onto the shaft and then seated it in the case. |

Finally got my clutch apart. Grenade plate looks great. Anyone have 2 steels and a fiber they want to sell? Thanks to Cyclonecharlie for saving me $80 on a spring compressor. PVC one worked great! |

I replaced the seal today but it looked quite a bit different than the conventional style that I took out. The one I installed was deeper in the seal area than the area that seated against the engine case.I was careful not to seat it too deeply so as to have the bearing touch it and then had to wrestle the spacer back in without having the outer seal lip folded in on itself. The part number that I had gotten from a reliable Buell dealer is 35151-74A. Can anyone confirm that this is the right seal? I did the detent plate and grenade plate since I was in there. |
