Bike has been running pretty solid lately, fixed up an econowinder, which is really great. I had some backfire, sputtering, and pops the other day, and after things evened out I noticed a burning smell of plastic or rubber. I was only a couple of blocks from home so I shut it down and came back a couple hours later and the key would not get power to the lights, except if I I turned and held it with some force a particular way, it would power the fuel pump and would start right up. The back of the ignition switch gets awfully hot so I'm assuming it shorted out? The fuses look clean, anything else I should check or does this sound like a bad switch? Looks like no first Thursday for me. |

Bad ignition switch, get the aftermarket one from Al...it's far superior. Order it today and tell him you need it by Thursday! Or just make a temporary jumper- 6" of wire and 3 female spade connectors are all you need to take the place of the switch. THEN, come to my place to BBQ on your way to Dulonos! http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/37/ 457682.html?1280586250 |

Yup, key switches get hot, you'll probably notice that the wires are starting to brown where they enter the cylinder also. I rebuilt mine not long ago and was having key woes. I tore it apart to inspect and clean and well, that was the end of that. To make a long story short I just needed to jump it long enough to test it out and had one of those cheap red rocker switches that come with fog lights laying around. Hooked it up and have had it on there ever since. I only carry the key to unlock the seat. And it doesn't get hot. |

Bikes are EXTREMELY easy to hot wire. I won't advertise how, but if you follow the wiring diagram you'll be able to figure out which wires to jumper... |

Yes sloppy they are and it bothers me that it is that easy. I have done it to an xb, Surprisingly simple. Tubers are even easier. Especially the X1's I was wondering if there is an anti theft kit you can buy. Like the I-lock set up on many fords. |

Use the steering lock. Hide a toggle switch. |

anyone care to pm me some more details on rigging up a temporary jumper or wiring it on? I don't have access to my manual right now to see the diagram but I know it's just the three wires so it can't be too hard I got the new switch ordered and shipped from Al yesterday, so hopefully I can get it in by thursday but I need to figure something out in the mean time |

I once got stranded with my X1 due to a bad switch. Took me a while to figure it out, but then just pushed 3 1 cent coins in the plug so they fit tight and bridged all 3 pins, the juice was back and I on he way. Just have to make sure you got enough coins to start your bike :-) |

Here's the manual diagram: It's only 3 wires. make a jumper with 3 female spade connectors like this: Figure out which one has constant 12v, and the other 2 are your ign and light circuits. Leave the 2 wires connected to those all the time, unplug the 12V one when you park. You can have this jumper if you swing up to Brooklyn Park and get it! |

I got the switch in the mail and will get it in today. I'm going to try and duck out of work early enough to make it up for the BBQ but if anything I will see you all at dulono's. I'll check back in on the first thursday thread to see where we're meeting. Thanks so much again! |
