PO said the header on my S2T is an S1W header. I can't tell, except that the header on my S1W stops short of making the final turn to end up in line with the V&H - the can has a pipe that makes the turn up to connect to the header in front of the engine, while the (supposedly) S1W header pipes on the S2 extends around to where the Supertrapp slips right on. I will post a pic, and pipe diameter once I am back home in a couple of days, as the header is off the bike. Meanwhile, though, I was wondering if the heat shield (missing from the S2T) would fit either pipe. Is there another way to tell which is which, and which heat shield will fit? |

The S2 header is a 2" collector, pointed at the rear of the motorcycle. This header has the final "elbow" on it, and the muffler can have a straight inlet. The S1W header is a 2.5" collector, pointed across the front of the engine. This header requires a muffler with an elbow on it. The S1W *race* header has a 2.5" collector, pointed at the rear of the motorcycle. If you are talking about the heat shield on the upper part of the rear primary tube...any of the S-bend header heat shields should go right on. My S1W has a physically larger/fatter shield than my S2, which is more streamlined...but (and I haven't tried it, but I probably could) they should interchange just fine. The upper bends are the same; the difference is in the collectors and the overall primary tube lengths. |

If you have the S1WL pipe a S1,S3 or M2 heatshield used on the pipes that went over the frame will work. The S2 is straighter and longer.. The S2 was a 2 inch pipe. The S1WL was 2.5 inch. The 2.5 pipe was also used on later S1 and S3 models. The race pipe was also 2.5 but wrapped around the front like the S2.... |

So now I'm all anxious to go back and measure the collector. It's either 2" (Stock S2) or 2.5" (S1W race), because the Old style Supertrapp (external discs) slips straight on. Will update. Yeah, I am talking about the rear primary tube heat shield that goes on with the hose clamp fittings. The bike doesn't have one, and even if I remove the lower fairings in summer, I'm thinking it might "seem" or "feel" more comfortable if I am riding while not thinking about melting my inside right trouser leg. |

If the old ED 'Trapp slides on...it's a 2". The S2 pipe will also have been made in sections, with welds visible in a couple of spots on the curves. Later headers were mandrel bent tubes, single piece primaries. |

Pipes are smoothies (I'm going by pic's on my pooter, and comparing them to the "S2 for sale" thread pics of other bikes. How do the hose clamps attach to the inside of the heat shields, so they can be clamped onto the header pipe? |

There's little "u" brackets welded to the inside of the shield, you slide the hose clamp through them, around the exhaust pipe, and tighten. |

Crappy phone pic from when I was doing the Thunderstorm top end...but here's an OEM S2 header. If you look straight down from the leading edge of the air cleaner, you see 2 weld points at either end of a U shaped bend. It also shows the OEM S2 heat shield.

Hard to tell from the pic. Could be an OEM '96 header on there, I don't recall exactly but maybe the '95 was the only year with the hand-welded header. If your collector is 2" and faces to the rear, it's a stock S2 header. |

I'll find out Tuesday when I'm home. Thanks for the help. |

Could be an OEM '96 header on there, I don't recall exactly but maybe the '95 was the only year with the hand-welded header. All the OE S2 headers were the 'cut and paste' style made by Supertrapp. It wasn't until Custom Marine got the replacement S2 header business that the seamless S2 header came to fruition. The Custom Marine replacement S2 and RS/RSS headers are so difficult to tell from one another - but that's a story for another time... When Custom Marine first started making the race headers, I had one made with a 2" outlet for my S2 - so my Supertrapp would bolt right up. Everyone else who bought one at the time were *smart enough* to buy the 2&1/2" real race header. When I upgraded to the real race header and T-Storm'ed the S2, I sold that header to the creator of the M2 affectionately known later as 'The Nugget' and lost track of that header. A good way to identify (other than the obvious seams) an OE S2 header from a race header is that the shape of the rear pipe out of the head is slightly different. The race header is more like the S1 header where it goes more forward before going down. It's hard to describe, but Ratbuell should be able to easily compare his S1W and S2 when looking directly from the side. For the life of me, I can't remember if the Custom Marine S2 replacement header had this kick forward or if they duplicated the shape of the OE S2 header. Get some measurements and better pictures of the header and I'm sure we will be able to identify it 100%. All this talk about exhaust has me exhausted, 1313 |

Ratbuell should be able to easily compare his S1W and S2 when looking directly from the side Only problem is...my S1W has one o them thar "real" race headers on it now, not the OE header...but I do know what you mean. The S2 header just seems to come out and down from the rear port, where the S1W's seems to come out, forward, and down. The S2 just has franken-xaust on it. OEM header (I couldn't get rid of those welds, and it polished up so well!), automotive 2" to 2.5" adapter ring on the rear-facing collector, and Buell 2.5" race can (same as what's on my S1W with the race header). With the spacer in there, it made everything the perfect length and it looks like it belongs there! |

When I am back in MD this week, I can compare the header that is off the S2T with my S1W header, for shape of the rear pipe. |

2-1/2" collector pipe dia. Woo hoo - I guess it's an S1W race header! New question, for S2T owners: with my bike apart, I can't tell if there will be any clearance issue between the right lower fairing and what looks like a slightly fatter S1 heat shield. Does it look like a tight squeeze there, for anyone who has an S2T with lowers installed and a heat shield? Would either S2 or S1 shield fit the pipe? I don't have a stock S2 header to compare; the Buell part numbers are slightly different, so obviously the parts are not identical. |

The factory heat shield shouldn't come anywhere close to the lowers. The shields go only on the rear primary tube, a couple inches from the head. There is no shield for the front tube. |

Looks kind of close, though.... (this is w/o the shield, obviously).

My shield stops about 2" above the lower. I think. I can go check if you want. And I got your message today - I had to go into work (on my day off, grrrr) and put out a couple fires, and that was when you called. Since PMs seem to be down, shoot an email to j.goetz72@yahoo and at least I'll know what to be looking at/for when I call you back, lol. |
