I recently bought a 2001 Buell X1, and it is pretty darned awesome, but the only thing I have an issue with is it doesn't always start right up. Is there a certain way your supposed to start it? With my carb bike I just pull the choke and throttle a couple times and thats it.
The only other thing I have to fix is the replacing all the front controls and headlight, the previous owner wanted a crotch rocket stance and set this one up for it.
Last question. What is under the rear tail on a stock X1? Mine has a flat aluminum piece riveted to it.

turn it on, switch the red kill switch to run, Pull clutch in and WAIT for the red light to go out. Once it has gone off it is ready to start.

The fuel pump must pressurize the system up!

Then it will start up the right way!

You need a factory service manual NOW!

Under the seat you are missing the trunk. The stock trunk can hold a lot of smaller items. But....The trunk is ugly "i" think. But i do miss all that "junk in the trunk"

You can get a new stock headlight off flebay for dirt cheap right now.

This is the cheapest you will find

It has almost all you need to put the front back to stock. Except the fly screen and some washers........Or you could leave the front alone and put an XB fly screen on to compliment the dual lights.

Well hopefully the PO didn't jack up the wiring harness connection rigging those lights up.

If you're giving an X1 any throttle at all when you start it, it most likely will not start.

Sage advice from another poster here...

Make a fist. Extend index finger. Push start button.

My X1 will not start and idle without throttle. I think it's a problem with the TPS needing reset, but nonetheless it won't start cold without a little throttle.

Yes, fuel injection changes everything about the start-up process, so if you are used to carb'ed bikes, just stay off the throttle and let the magic EFI elves do their thing. All good info above.

I know this topic has been discussed over and over but some bikes will not idle on their own (without a little throttle) at cold start. Mine is one of them. So depending on whatever causes this to happen (and trust me, I've tried every thing), you may (or may not) need to give it a little gas for a few seconds. So my suggestion to you is don't get too hung up on this if your bike needs a little "motivation" to idle on its own. Of course you can raise your idle speed to get it to work but then you will have to lower it when the bike is fully warm. YMMV.
Good luck with the bike. It will keep growing on you the longer you ride it...

@Badnova

If you like the headlights, check these out:

This is what I used on my X1W, I also fabricated a windshield bracket to fit a new style windscreen.
