I just finished putting my 2002 X1W together after powdercoating a bunch of parts. I tried to start it up, I turn the key, everything is ok, the signal lights, brake light, horn, etc... all work fine. When I put the kill switch to run, the 20amp ignition fuse blows up. I tried a few fuses and they all blew up. Any idea what may cause that (perhaps a mistake while re-hooking the cam position sensor after taking the connector apart)? Take the Wire'ing DIAGRAM in the FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL for your YEAR/MODEL and disconnect what ever it feeds ... If it still blows the fuse it is the installation on a feed wire ... If not it is one of the components that is being fed off the IGN. fuse ... TO AVOID MYSTERY ELECTRICAL PROBLEMS, TIE WRAP ALL YOUR WIRE'ING SO THAT THE WIGGLE TEST IS NOT BEING DONE WHILE YOU ARE RIDING ... | ||

I know this will sound silly, but try unplugging the speed sensor at the connector under the battery. Had the same problem w/my '01 X-1, and the ref signal wire (power) to the sensor had shorted to the ground wire right where they go into the sensor body. Hope this helps, Dave | ||

AkBUELL: If "i" had a BUELL Model with a SPEEDOMETER SENSOR it would get a TOGGLE SWITCH so that it would be the FIRST thing to TURN OFF !!! Second would be the SIDE STAND SWITCH !!! | ||

OK, thanks guys, I'm taking note of that. I'm studying the ignition system wiring diagram and I guess I'm going to try unhooking each sensor/component one by one, then if that doesn't work, I'll have to bite the bullet and inspect the wiring for shorts. | ||

+1 Akbuell, had the same symptom, and it was the speedo sensor. Easy enough to check. | ||

I'm looking at pics of my teardown and just realized the speed sensor is very close to the starter, I had a hell of a time wiggling that starter out and back in that spot, maybe I damaged the speed sensor. So I just follow the wire from the sensor and will eventually come to a connector, just unplug that, and try the run switch again? | ||

if you had right hand switch off bike you possibly have pinch wire or broken insulation on a wire grounding out..... i don't know who said it but go back where you have been ! lessons learned the hard way be there done it.... | ||

Mate had the same problem, he had the wrong plug in the wrong hole, can't remember which one tho. | ||

Found my problem, the speed sensor wire was stuck under the starter and grounded on the engine. I lifted the starter and freed the wire and everything is fine. | ||

Congrats on finding the problem, and thanks much for letting us know what was wrong. As an aside, since the insulation on your speed sensor has been 'compromised', it might do to get a new one and have it on hand in case of a future failure... | ||
