Only 15k on my '01 M2, today a nasty knocking sound started.Very loud,under the primary cover(clutch basket side.Severe knocking...I' mean SEVERE!... no change when clutch is pulled in.Chain has 1/4" play, trans oil is fresh,changed every 3k. I need advice before I pull apart the primary cover.What do I look for? Rick |

Id look for a loose crank nut or a broken chain adj. shoe....Bendix hitting the ring gear on the clutch. A screw or nut floating around in the cavity. Pull the cover and start looking till you find something. It's all free till you find something. |

Its easy to see whats going on in there when you pull it. I agree with Charlie, I'm thinking broken backplate on the primary tensioner shoe, or loose stator bell nut. I think people have occasionally had magnets let go as well. The good news is that on an M2, you can pull the transmission pretty easily. So if something did shred itself in there, you can clean it all up without splitting cases. |

There's a service manual for S-1's here. M-2 primary should be identical. Here's some things I've learned: 1) When you're taking the derby cover off, back the bolts out evenly all the way around or it'll bind and be very hard to remove. Get rid of the Torx head bolts that hold the derby cover on. Replace them with Allen heads. 2) Get an updated primary chain tensioner and primary cover gasket. 3) Grind the heads off a couple of long 1/4"-20 bolts and use them to hold the primary gasket on when you're re-assembling it. 4) If you need to remove the alternator rotor, do not use an impact wrench on the crank nut. It'll jar the magnets loose. Use a 4" piece of flat aluminum (1/8" x 2" or so) to jam the primary sprockets so you can loosen the crank and clutch nuts. The clutch nut is left hand thread. rt |

..Loose crank nut. Put in the time, fixed it right... Thanks! The tool tip was very handy!!! Thanks Road_thing! No damage to trans or stator... EXCEPT upon inspection clutch side ring gear and outer clutch basket flex 1/4" Shaft Nut is tight..Is this a bad bearing or normal? That flex is only on the outer basket / ring gear side.The center section of clutch hub is tight. NOW I'm worried... yet,gearbox oil was sweet upon draining. Yes, bike is on the road,I'm not ready for any mileage until I know...for sure. Thanks ya'll Rick |

Rick, check the clutch adjustment section on the S1 manual (click on R_T's link above), I don't recall exactly, you tighten it then back it off a bit. Then use the cable to make your fine adjustment. |

When my bearing was bad it made a slightly different sound in neutral that was not present in gear. |
