I run an X1 with the updated shifter and no chin fairing. The dang bolt keeps backing out! I loc-tited last year and got a good years worth or riding without issue, but now I can't for the life of me get it to stay...blue loc-tite, red loc-tite, torqued down super tight...all tried after cleaning the threads on both sided out really well. So...what have you done? What's the trick? | ||

Knee-Jerk response: I would suggest safety wire. which bolt is it? I'm still running the boomerang shifter so I'm having a hard time visualizing the issue. | ||

I had the same problem a few times. I bought a safety wire kit that came with some thin star shaped washers that you could safety wire to and the bolt would insert through the washer and then bend the star points around the bolt and i finish the job by twisting the the wire around the clutch cable at the base. I have no problems since this fix. | ||

Sounds like the threads may be going. Next time you have the primary off, check the threads and if needed insert a Heli coil or thread repair of your choice. | ||

Interesting thought, Spidey. It seems to go in solid and tight (TWSS), but you could be right, Being the the opening in the cover is a larger diameter anyway, I don't mind the thought of a larger diameter bolt too. | ||

...and I will be taking the cover off this winter to replace the shoe. So this may be the way to go. | ||

So....how does one go about safety wiring the bolt?  Never done it before- standard supplies or special kit/tools? I have a drill press and good skills....just never done this before! | ||

Worth a shot, no other way I could think of a bolt backing out with loctite and proper tourqe, you could always try red  | ||

had similar issue, is there oil on the bolt? if so replace the primary gasket ( clear up the leak ) clean hole and parts use blue loctite make sure that the bolt is not bottoming in the hole, Vs getting tight should solve it.. (did for me) if not safety wire | ||

One thing about locktite is it will only cure in the absence of oxygen. The hole will need to be sprayed out with brake clean and the bolt cleaned up really well i.e. get old lock tight off. Then you need to let it sit overnight to make sure the locktite set up. | ||

There is a bit of oil in the hole...not much. I have been using carb cleaner, then q-tips to scrub it clean, then air dry for a while, then loc-tite, then let it sit over night! Look like safety wire is the way to go... | ||

Andy, Find the right sized bore brush (usually brass bristled) and chuck it in a drill. clean all the old Locktite and such out of the hole. Clean it up with carb cleaner and air. I use Hylomar on mine. It holds well and seals any oil leaks. If your threads are heading south, all bets are off.... | ||

I got the same problem, my bolt also has oil on it so looks like I need to Heli Coil it, anyone know the size of that bolt so I can get the right Coil and fix it on the next oil change? | ||
