So as I ride I am getting this horrible squeak noise (metal on metal kind) from where the front sproket is on my M2. The noise is directly related to the speed I am traveling. My guess is that it may be something like a bearing where the output shaft comes out of the tranny. here ae my questions.

1. I know the sprocket is held on by reverse threads. what is the best way to remove it. The book said leave the bike in 1st gear and turn, but I just keep turning the motor over. I have a big enough socket, I replaced my front sprocket a number of years ago with the 26 tooth version.

2. I have no fluid leaking out so I think that is good, but does anyone know what I am going to be able to see if when i get the sprocket off?

3. If you have had this issue, can you tell me about what you enede up having to fix and approximately the costs/tools associated with it.

Thanks!

Have not had the problem myself, but from previous posts.......

As to the sprocket nut, if the sprocket holding tool is not available (which seems to be the case) I have 'locked' the system together by sticking a 2X4 through the wheel spokes to prevent the engine from turning over. Does stress the drive belt.

Or, if you have or can get a primary locking bar, you can remove the primary cover and install the bar, locking the engine. The locking bar is easy to make.

It sounds like the needle bearing on the 5th gear main shaft is failing/has failed. Typically, the rust you see after removing the sprocket tells the tale. If so, you will have to remove the tranny, making the locking bar between the primary sprocket and clutch hub a better solution, perhaps, than the 2X4.

Hope this helps, Dave

An air impact wrench works great for jobs like that.

Before you get too far a long, a quick check. Loosen the drive belt so that it can be pulled away from the front pulley. Select neutral, and turn the front pulley by hand. If you feel any roughness, or a 'gravelly' feel, or crunchy noises ......

Lots of great ideas here, thanks guys! I keep the belt pretty loose, but this sounds very metal on metal like. I am hoping to take some time with the bike this weekend and look into the issue.

Koz:

Just wondering if you have had a chance to look into your problem, and what you might have found. Hopefully, nothing serious.
