Come to think about it the aluminium swing arms also had a paint/powder coat on it to. It was the same silver that is/was on the engine cases..

The X1W had the same powdercoat on its swingarm as all the other 99+ tubers which was some shade of gray. I have seen one coated white, and it looked sharp. Mine is coated "rape yellow", which was the closest I could get to "reactor yellow". "Traffic yellow" had too much orange in it. Calm down, rape refers the the color of the rape seed flower.

If what came stock on the swing arm is powder coat, it's the worst powder coat I've ever seen. Mine looked like some sort of clear anodization that was oxidizing, I wouldn't think that powder coat would do that.

if you are talking 98 S1W, swingarm is painted with Mercedes Silver.

"I wouldn't think that powder coat would do that." Powder coat is very similar to spayed paint, it will definitely oxidize and fade al the same (although it is likely to be more resistant to it).

I have 2 aluminum swingarms for my X1, neither have any kind of coating on the,...definitely just the raw aluminum.

My 2000 did not have a coating on it. Compare the swing arm to the passenger peg bracket, passenger bracket is shiny because it has a coating, swing arm is dull. The wheels were the same way, just bare cast aluminum. If you tried to clean them it would tear the rag up faster than you could remove any dirt because it was bare cast metal, no coating.

Well looks like I was wrong about the early 99 X1s as well. This is an email from my buddy who was one of the leads on the project for the aluminium swing arms.

"beginning with the 99 X1. All are powder coated. I know more about all the aluminum swingarms than anyone on this planet."

As for the rag getting tore up on the swing arm, my rags will do the same on my rear sprocket and I doubt the black is bare aluminium...

Yeah, I bought my 99X1 in January of 99, and while it didn't look coated, when I went to powdercoat it yellow, I found that it was indeed coated. Easy to miss, since it is quite an aluminum looking color.

The coating is quite thin, and lets the rough casting show through. Even though it tears up a rag, it is still coated.

Are the primary and cam covers coated as well? They appear to have the same finish as the swing arm. If the swing arm is indeed coated it's the worst, cheapest powder coat job I've ever seen.
