I have replaced the speed sensor several times within a year. I have used part number 74331-01B twice, as well as an older part number that I can't remember. This time I got 25 miles from the sensor before it failed. It was fine on the way to work, but when I got on to come home that afternoon, it wasn't working. I have went through the archives, over and over again, nothing really helps out. I have read about a rewire kit that seems to apply to the XB's, I have read about wiring in a voltage regulator, but can't find much in-detail help about it. Is there a newer part number with a voltage regulator built in? Is there a new part number at all? If someone can point me to a page showing the voltage regulator, I'm in desperate need of something. ANYTHING! As an add-on to the above post. . . . Any chance the hi-fire ignition or coil is causing the issue? | ||

The speedometer stops working. I replace the sensor, it starts working again. Cleaning the sensor never works. there are no metal flakes sticking to it. | ||

No problem! http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/384 2/31697.html?1056728330 Or just go to Wal Mart and get a car phone charger that regulates 5V (anything under 10 volts is probably fine) and cut that up. Probably cheaper then the Radio Shack parts... In hindsight, you could probably build that same setup I showed without the choke or capacitors and it would work just as well for this application... it was probably overkill. (Then again, at $60 per sensor, overkill isn't overkill  ) | ||

Does it completely quit or does it starts off sporadically jumping the spdeed all over? That's what happened to me a month after replacing the sensor. I traced the wire and found a bare spot in the cable, wires exposed. I'd check to make sure all wires are good? | ||

Bill don't the newest sensors have voltage regulation built in? XB parts definitely not, supply voltage is provided by the ECM. 78L05 should be fine to drive a XB sensor from 12 volts. | ||

I don't know... I never got one of the new ones, my old one with the filter just kept working until I sold the bike. You wouldn't want to add a regulator to a regulated one, so it would be good to know. | ||

I never had any problem with speed sensor since I bought my X1 in 1999, I never have replaced it. Once my speedometer stopped working and turned out be the accessory fuse 15 amp. was making bad contact. I replaced it for a new one and it is working fine since then without any problem. Sometimes the simplest things are the hardest to find out. That was mine, yours may be different. Regards. | ||

I've had the same experience. My third one just quit and I need to get a new one shortly. |
