I recently bought a 99 cyclone and the starter was dead when i bought it. It makes a buzzing noise but wont kick over. I was wondering if i can replace it with a starter from a different buell or sportster? Just trying to avoid the stealership. thanks for the help. |

I have my old starter with 15,000 miles I'll sell for pretty cheap. |

Mine is from a 2002. I pulled it off because I got a new one in a parts buy with a new transmission. It wasn't a "needed" fix, and neither was the tranny, but it was more of a "oh, while I'm in there" kind of jobs. |

Are you sure it's the starter and not just a low charge on the battery ? |

I'm just trying to come up to speed, but are you saying that the starter is just not engaging, but it is spinning? If your battery is all set, I seem to remember something about starter issues being linked to a bad ground (correct me if I'm way off here). I think that it could be that wide ground strap that is in front of your rear tire. I imagine that dirt build up can cause an insufficient connection that will inhibit your starter from engaging. There is a magnet that pulls the gear (inside the starter) inline with the fly wheel/transmission when you hit your start button and disengages when you release the button. If there is no charge or not enough, you'll have an issue. Sometimes this can cause your starter to grind because it doesn't 'fully' engage. I hope this helps. |

Thanks for all the good info guys. I took off the ground strap and checked my battery today. After cleaning the ground strap and sanding it to a luster i reinstalled it. Battery was good so i tried again and had the same results. It may be that the starter clutch is not engaging like Duceater said. So i guess i have to take it off. Brinnutz, I sent you an email. Im not sure if you got it. (Message edited by slomo on April 22, 2010) |
