what's up ? i got my 2002 m2 used back in 2004 . i change the oil my self and put in 2qt , run the motor , then check the oil level. it reads about 1/4 in. from the bottom line on the stick. it takes about 3/4 of a qt to fill to the top line, so if i could get a length of a stock oil stick(just the metal rod)i can check mine against it , or am i doing some thing wrong ? i'm new to this , but i been checking this site since i got my m2, i got alot of help from your guys to keep up on my m2 ,thanks alot. Your ok, To get an accurate reading your engine/oil needs to be at Normal Op Temp. Oil Expands when hot.You need to ride a guestimate of about 15 min to get to Normal Temp! As long as your oil level is above the bottom line your ok! For the last 10 years I have run my level between the bottom line and halfway beetween two lines! If you run oil level near the top line your asking for puking oil (blow by or worse having your dipstick blow). At Oil change I usually put 2 and 3/4 Qt. |

Oh I forgot! I use the Long Filter that the Dyna's use so I hold a lil more oil than you will! |

If you change the oil and put in 2qt, whatever the reading is when hot, that's 'your' reading. You might file a "normal" mark around your dipstick for future reference. Mine just touches the dipstick, maybe less than 1/16th of an inch. Fine. Any more oil added will blow out the breathers. If you have the bigger oil filter, or a cooler, you can add the extra, but still not above the 'normal' line. |

Mine barely touches the stick with two quarts of oil and a Dyna filter. |

Is ours the same as the Sportster dip stick? Maybe their oil res has a different capacity or shape making it mark the stick differently. |

Get it hot prior to checking it. I've been running the FL1A since the 1st day of ownership on my '02 M2 and it takes what the book calls for + 1/4 of quart. If you put any additional oil in it it will volume adjust using the undocumented 'self-leveling' feature |

The service manual calls for 2qts. for the 02 model,I usually put about 4 oz more because at 2 qts mine does not touch the stick, the extra 4 ounces gives me a reference point to go by |

I did my stator. When I installed the new one I wrapped part of the wiring with electrical tape to keep it from vibrating and causing a rub spot on the wire. No problems since, that was 4 years ago. It can be done at home with few special tools and a manual if you are into that kinda thing. |
