My x-1 had a major mechanical engine problem yesterday. Was riding on hiway. Came to a small town when slowed down up on entering town engine started running only on rear cylinder. Wnen revved up a bit would run on both Checked ignition system and was sparking on both cylinder even when front was not firing. Left to go home about a mile up the road front went completely dead. was going to limp home on rear only. About another mile heard a pop major clanking and bike went dead. Had to leave at a very nice persons house who just happened to be a friend of friend to go pick up this morning. The bike will start nd run, but only on rear and intake lifter tube is shaking badly and leaking oil. Was told it may be just a broken rocker arm and bent intake lifter. Hopefully because if anything really major, just may move on to another bike. tube Buells are cheap around here. There are 2 f/s. One is a 98 s2T with 20k , one owner for 2500 and a 99 m-2 with fresh engine rebuild for 2300. Will keep you posted after intial diagnosis. Have a buell shop manual with lots of pictuers.. |

Lifters don't bend, they disintegrate. Pushrods and valves bend. I think you are on the right track tho. |

Bummer. I recommend you pull the rocker box cover on the cylinder with the bad tube--you ought to be able to diagnose the problem at that point. rt |

I will bet $100 its an exhaust valve, And i bet it was at the valve lock where it broke! if the push-rod tube is bent and leaking you took out the push-rod also. You are lucky the valve didn't hop into the rear cylinder through the intake and wipe out the whole top end. When my 01 X1 dropped the front exhaust valve i was lucky and it only made a mark on the piston, Crunched the valve up into the exhaust port and shattered the valve guide. Here is the valve
All the shattered parts
The top of the rocker box off
The damage to the piston (very minor) right side of piston there is a tiny moon shaped dent net to where valve pocket is
This was the first time a valve dropped and it cost me $117 and some of my time to tear it down and re-install. The second valve on the rear really grenaded and then hoped through the intake in to the front cylinder and destroyed the whole motor Here is the rear cylinder after

Man, you're really scaring he heck out of our friend here... Then again, looks like a good excuse to upgrade to a 1250. |

Push rod not lifter,I always screw up on that. On front cylinder so far, pushrod on intke bent, bottom of sparkplug broke off. Exhaust rocker or valve doesn't even move. Just pulled exhaust and had chunks of metal in header and muffler. Will update after pulling head becuase i can see crap sitting on the piston thru the plug hole.. |

Looks like there were some defective exhaust valves in 2000 and 2001 ... They were breaking at the valve keeper notch ... My 2000 BLAST had one and it ate my engine ... |

The funny thing about it is that they both broke at low RPM. But i will never forget that blender full of nickles sound it made! I ruined both my heads and jugs. So i had to spend more than i wanted to, But on the plus side i now have the 1250 kit and stage 2 heads on it and love it. |

Tom, no reason to move on to another Buell. You can have yours up and running for a couple hundred bucks and a saturday's worth of garage time. Under $1000 would get you some nice upgraded replacement parts if you're interested in a few more horses. |

I'm not gonna get another buell. Just pissed off is all. freaking bike is more high maintenace than my wife. But both both are fun to ride when they are agreeable. Nic pic's preybird,. This wouldn't be the first m/c, boat, or vehicle i;ve hurt an engine on. just sucks when i do. |

"I've hurt an engine" It is so not your fault, I had a bad valve 2 times and they both broke at the locks and they were both exhaust valves. You can actually hold them up next to each other and see they snapped off exactly at the same place. Was not my fault, But it was HD poor quality control to blame. That is why i do not use Factory HD parts unless i absolutely have to!! All the HD parts i have used failed and\or were of poor quality and strength Now i only use high quality aftermarket parts. They are expensive but well worth it to me! |

Preybird1: It is and was "POOR QUALITY CONTROL" from the supplier !!! Took my exhaust valve to a MACHINIST who say'ed the keeper notch was improperly cut !!! Got another head for my BLAST and it will get aftermarket valves !!! When and if "i" up-date my 97 S3T valves, they will also be aftermarket valves !!! |

Dude don't blow it off yet. Let me have it to work on. It can't be that much or to time consuming to fix. |

It can be fixed, pay good attention to a couple of things. 1. no metal got into the lower part of the motor 2. the connecting rod is ok and the crank bearing it is connected to is not damaged. 3. the lifter was not damaged The push rod tubes are cheap, and so are some of the other parts. I would get some other valves, Stainless aftermarket ones I am using these valves. 7mm with single beehive XB valve springs. http://www.ferrea.com/tech-competition-plus-valves .php If these 3 points are ok, Then it should be an easy re-build and cheap if you do it yourself. |

You haven't really hurt the engine unless you can see through a piston I bought Betty with the same issue discussed here.. front exhaust valve failure. Replacement parts look much better though! And the end result.. after tearing her down to the frame, doing some painting and polishing, then installing the new 1250 top end.

Sounds like i need to pull rear head and have it rebuilt too. Might as well while it is down. thanks for the tips Phillip. Between p47b, another friedn and myself it will get repaired. We have the ability. It is just time to do it. I'm going to take the time and do it right, and do some other things while down. Install a new exhaust, change plastics and tires |

Thanks Eric. Found metal in the intake all the way to the rear cylinder. Still haven't pulled head. Can't get one intake bolt loose. Freaking allen head bolts. Thanks also Russ for the advice and encouragement |

X-1's are too cool to let waste....fix it up....on valves I have two pieces of advice...Ferrea or Black Diamond brands. And be sure you get radius keepers...not square groove.....square groove keepers are for tractors and lawn mowers, not motorcycles...(your stock valves are square groove)... |

I actually don't think the valve broke at the keeper. The valve spring and stem part of the valve with the keeper are still in the top of the head. Not really sure what caused it to break. Heard a couple of theories. I'm going to fix it. Just taking my time doing it. Thankful i didn't sell any of my other bikes yet. Since my wif said I can't ride her new can am.. |

If the valve broke at the head its a valve spring issue! Get away from any HD parts if you can! |

"i" totally agree with Preybird1 ... Up-date to after market !!! Over the years quality of the suppliers that are suppling their(H-D) valves has took a noise dive ... Got one in my 2000 BLAST engine which almost trashed it ... |

The only way to check your valves is to take them out and MAGNAFLUX them or any other engine component ... You can buy a poor mans MAGNAFLUX KIT from GRANGER SUPPLY(in my area) which consists of two aerosol cans ... One can is a Penetrant PN 3WU59 and the other the Developer PN 3WU60 ... |

The last 2 weeks i've had 2 other bikes go down. With major problems. The buell is on the bottom of the list now. The way things are right now, it may not get fixed.I may sell what is left of the 3 bikes and take a break. I'll repost if something changes.. |
