I replaced my intake seals last month with the James brand I got from Al along with the special allen wrench,pretty simple and straight forward job.I took my time installing them,tightning each bolt in equal amounts until the flanges were tight.I did not use any lube ect...on the seals,really saw no need to do so,just cleaned the sealing surfaces on the head as well as the intake and put them on.The bike did fine on the last few rides but it started leaning out again and hesitating on off idle revs but still runs great at WOT,I shot a little carb cleaner around the intake and the idle dropped.I'm going to pull it back down and look at the seals for any damage.Are the James seals better than the HD seals? I only put a 100 miles on these seals and if they are not damaged can I still use them again and should I use any lube on the seals the next time or do something different? |

Are your flanges Ok? Maybe that is what is giving you a problem. I got my seals from the H-D Stealer. You do that and you'll know the are new and they will fit. |

The flanges looked good but I'll check again,by the way my closest dealer is only Harley they quit with Buell about 7 years ago, will the part number be the same on the seals,I've got the numbers in my M2 parts book,better yet what year Harley/make can I use to get the correct seals? |

just ask for the seals from the same year Sportster as your M2. |

I had a Dennis Kirk gift card and had to order some ATV parts so I went ahead and ordered the James Blue seals,maybe they are pretty good |

Go to NAPA and get some Sylglide (sp?). One tube will last a lifetime... It makes the intakes last longer and easier to install. They move around a bit as you tighten everything up. |

Ok after looking at my intake should I see an equal amount of space between the intake spigots or "the part the seals slide on" and the flanges? If so my intake is not positioned right |

Little late on this "INFO", but here goes !!! The seals that you should use are Seal,intake manifold PN 26995-86B !!! (Message edited by buellistic on April 05, 2010) |

Hey LaFayette,actually I'll be back in Myrtle Beach tomorrow,I'll stop by the dealer and pick up some HD ones " 26995-86B" as well even though I got the James blue seals ordered it will be Friday before they arrive "I'm ready to RIDE",I know the James are not oem but by what I've read they are silicone based and thicker.I'll save the James for the next time,it does not take long to swap them with the tool I got from Al,it was well worth the money.I did pick up some Sil-Glide from Napa today which I try on them,I know the manual does not state lubing them but I'll try it,seem like many have had success doing it that way.But do we always go by the book! We all know that answer |

FWIW, my tool of choice for doing this job is a piece of a 1/4-inch allen wrench that I cut off of the bent end of the allen wrench. To tighten and loosen the manifold bolts, I can either install the cut off piece of the allen wrench into the bolt and operate it with a 1/4-inch combination wrench, or I can use the remaining portion of the allen wrench, which is now short enough to fit. HTH! Just remember to deburr the allen wrench and the piece removed before using them. |

Thanks Guell, I saw one on the shelf of the local hardware store and was curious if those were the correct size. Since I already bought a wrench from American Sport Bike I was too lazy to check. The American Sport Bike wrench has a ball on one end that is nice to have. |

I picked up a set of seals today at the dealer,the parts guy said it's best to use a criss cross tightening pattern on the the bolts instead of tightening one side at a time which I did and even though I took my time they leaked.So maybe the Sil-Glide and tightening the bolts like he said I'll have better results.The James "blue" seals will be in tomorrow,I guess |

Scdobber: "i" put silicon spray on the seals during assembly ... Also replaced the allen bolts with hex head bolts(drilled safety wire holes in the bolt heads so that the bolts could be safety wired) and torqued evenly and correctly ... Modified some box end wrenches so a torque wrench could be used ... These seals will last about 2 years, with a fan 4 years ... The James blue intake seals arrived today,here is 2 pics comparing them to the HD oem.Alot of difference in thickness and sealing surface which may be a issue in installing.I'll post the results this weekend (Message edited by scdobber on April 08, 2010) |

Looks like the JAMES SEALS are the same as the H-D -86C seals which are tooo big and hard to install ... |

I 'll try to test fit the blue seals,I've read several post where some had no issues installing them while others had to remove material from the intake which I don't plan to do.I may have a chance to work on the bike today |

Well,the seals went in trouble free with the exception of one bolt being a pain in the rear but I did use the Sil-Glide and it made the job easy.The bike is still running a tad on the lean side looking at the plugs,I may need to shim the needle some,I know .050" is too much,maybe I'll start at .020". At a steady cruising speed say 3000 rpm is the bike still running off the slow jet or both the slow and main? (Message edited by scdobber on April 09, 2010) |

If you are running idle mixture screw 2 1/2 turns out from the seat, #45(or #48) low speed jet, and a 190(or 200) high speed jet, you are not running lean ... Unleaded gas burns white on the spark plugs ... What do you have the spark plugs gaped at ??? How about telling us all where your timing mark is set in the timing plug hole, you did check your timing did you not ??? Shimming your needle will give you better throttle response in mid range ... |

The timing mark is coming up close to the rear of the timing hole using a small piece of plexiglass to view.#45 / #195 jets at 2.75 turns for best response,gap is at .038" on the plugs,would you recommend less gap? (Message edited by scdobber on April 09, 2010) |

My Service manual states .038"-.043" on the gap |
