hi all, the nice weather had me itching to ride the s2 to work this am; i know it's almost exactly 45 miles, on the route i take. (my daily beater's odo is wery accurate.) well, i always knew my s2's readings were optimistic, but, this is the first time i actually bothered to check - it said 51 miles. wow - that's ~13% off!?! any clues as to wazzup? front tire size is 120/70/17. thanks, doug s. |

Doug, mine (all of my S2s) are just the opposite. I will read 75MPH on the speedo and will only be doing 67MPH according to GPS. So, if I ride for one hour at 75 MPH (what is indicated on the speedo) I would have done only 67 miles in actual distance. The error is linear (more speed more error) and is the nature of mechanical speedo drive. |

If you think about it, both of you are showing the same direction- optimism. If the speedo reads faster than actual, it will acrue more mileage than actual, too. |

My *guess*? Buell used a speedo drive gear that was proportioned for whatever HD/Sportster it originally came on. And I don't know any Sporty's that have 17" wheels. Probably the "closest they could get" out of the parts bin. I need to take a look at my S2, now that I have the GPS mount on it...dammit, *making* me ride... |

frank, phelan is correct - my bike's speedo is optimistic, too - actual 67 when it says 75 sounds about right. which means you will have only traveled 67 miles instead of an indicated 75 - yust about the same error i am getting - your 12% vs my 13%... sounds like all the early buells are like this, i guess; yust wanted to make sure mine wasn't "special"... regardless, i had another great ride today. w/~38k on its ticker, i guess my bike really only has ~33.6k on it. doug s. |
