I know this should go in the KV section but I am not sure where to put it. Bike is a 1996 S2-T. I had a race header and can on it before so it might had been doing this before and I just could not hear it. I put a stock exhaust and header on it and that is when I noticed the noise. I am getting a squeaking or chirping from what sounds like the rear of the muffler. It increases with rpm and it does it in gear as well. I found one exhaust leak and fixed it so it appears to now be leak free. I thought for sure it was just something that came loose but I am unable to track anything loose that would cause it. I made sure the header flanges where tight, and all exhaust mounts are tight. The bike shifts fine and power seems to be fine. I cannot feel anything loose to indicate a main shaft bolt being loose. In fact it does not appear to be coming from the primary at all. I checked the front and rear brake and no go. It does this while rolling or not. I thought it might be a valve train noise but it does not seem to be consistent. I am lost on this one. |

Could it be an exhaust valve? |

Squeak? Or a chirp? Squeak could be a muffler hangar or band - spray all the mount points good with penetrant (I use BG In-Force, awesome stuff) and go for a ride to see if that helps. A chirp could be a weird backpressure wave in the muffler (possibly), or debris in the muffler. How long was it sitting? Could there be (currently or in the past) a tiny furry resident in there blocking things up? I know it's you, but I have to say it anyway...you torqued the exhaust system down in proper sequence, yes? I've had head flanges/gaskets squeak a little bit, even on properly installed systems, until I burn the "new" out of 'em.... Only other thing I can think of is rear isos. Spray them too (one item at a time, remember - that way you can tell which spray fixed it!). Hell, it could be fiberglass! Tail section to tank cover, if it isn't completely tight or a perfect fit (I know...an S2 with odd panel gaps?!), they can squeak against each other. So can the luggage brackets where they meet the bike, and where they meet the bags. I know I used to get a hella-squeak out of my bags before I added the braces to the passenger pegs.... |

could be a muffler hangar or band Checked that first. torqued the exhaust system down in proper sequence, Yes, TWICE. rear isos. I thought about that two. The chirp is coming from the exhaust. I am going to do what Butch suggested and put another exhaust on it to see what happens. I have no idea how long the exhaust had been sitting around since I got it off ebay from a AZ S2 with 5K miles however, the outside had a good rust build up on it so maybe it is something inside the can moving. I guess that is possible and will know for sure tonight. I remember seeing a cut away of the exhaust at one time but cannot find it. It is an unusual design and since I have more back pressure now maybe it is moving something. If Butch is correct I owe him a beer.

Ebutch, I had almost the same thing happen on my S2, it was driving me nuts! I would hear a clunk up high in front every time I hit a decent bump. I finally tracked it down, internal spring in the headlight had popped off. The headlight shell was moving around.. |

That headlight is the cats ass! Was that a direct replacement or did you have to do some modding? |

I put the stock can on my X1 for a couple of days (wife's complaint) and started hearing so many "noises" coming from the drivetrain that it scared the heck out of me. Put the V&H right back on and everything got nice and "quiet"!! That was 8000 miles ago... Good luck with finding the source... |

Yep, I'm using that one. If anyone is interested...I'd rather use the E-code (European beam spread) than the US spec light. Their patterns are always better over there, less "liability" from the legal system from "blinding" oncoming cars...but even the US spec that Frank posted is light-years (pun intended) ahead of the old sealed-beam light. And, the pinout on the bulb is identical to the factory sealed-beam light, so it's plug and play. |
