If you remember, I posted that the V&H pipe had blown the front pipe mount and was going to need to be welded:
As I started the removal procedure, I noticed this:
Yep. That's the REAR mount. When I flipped it over, I also found this:
And this:
So not only are both of the mounts fubar, but it's got two pretty large holes in it. I'm thinking it's a total loss. Anyone have a stock or other pipe they'd be interested in donating/selling cheap for the cause? |

looks like it was mounted incorrectly from the start. Do you have any pics of the bike with the pipe on before removal? |

No. Seemed a pretty straight forward mounting. What mounting errors could have created this debacle? |

That's why I asked for a pic, it is easier to explain. The bracket on the rear that attached the rear of the muffler to the back of the engine, the piece of angle iron with two offset triangles that this back bolts two is supposed to mount directly to the motor, IE you have to remove the stock muffler mount, the Z bracket. A lot of people think the V&H mounting bracket mounts to the Z bracket, but this leaves the muffler at an odd angle leading to stress on the front mount as well at the rear and leaving it low to get hit by bumps... Should look like this Others mount them to the Z bracket and the pipe will be angled to the ground... |

The Z bracket is still there and what the muffler was mounted to. Sounds like his was the issue. It was definitely, as can be seen by the pictures, banged up. Now I just gotta find a new muffler. I think we may have one hanging around the shop. The headers have the 2.5" outlet. I'm wondering if this might not also explain some of the performance issues. This thing had so many holes in it that it couldn't have provided much back pressure. |

Well, maybe not quite a total loss, you can sell the V&H bracket on eBay! |

yep, that V&H bracket is supposed to be mounted where the Z bracket is mounted, Typical V&H installation error, seen it done 100 times and a lot of times by H-D 'techs' |

Sheesh, from the look of it the only thing keeping it on the bike was the clamp holding the pipe to the header! Strongly urge you to replace the exhaust studs as a preemptive measure, they've been under a lot of stress with that muffler bouncing around under the bike for who knows how long. |

Probably not a bad idea. Were there customarily no instructions with the V&H pipes? How do you screw this up? |

Yeah, I remembered they didn't make a lot of noise about it, page one has this line under removal: "6. Remove and bolts and stock rear exhaust bracket attached to chassis. Stock bracket is replaced by bracket A195." Pretty easy to forget that,if you've bothered to read the instructions, by the time you reach the end. Such an easy project that most of us probably only read enough to figure out it's a pretty easy project, and miss those important little details. So did you buy that bike then Jeremy or is it still languishing in the back of the shop? |

I've personally fixed 2 or 3 of the above mount screwups. Folks I met along the way, friends, etc. None went as bad as that though. Fatty, do you need a stock muffler? I think I've got a spare. Brad |

I haven't decided on the purchase yet. Things like this give me pause. Supposedly there is an M2 race muffler floating around the shop. If so, I'll snag it. Otherwise, I might need a pipe. Since I don't own it, I hate to pour money into it. I just hate the thought of buying a bike only to have to pour money into it fixing problems. It's fun to ride and could be a nice fixer-upper. The motor, without a tender, fired right up. Not a cough or a sputter. |

Well you needed the 2.5" collector anyway didn't you? I can understand not wanting to buy a bike that's been poorly maintained. Could take a bit to work out it's kinks. |

Thanks for the heads up. I posted in the thread. I'm checking with our shop today and see what we have lying around. If I've got something for Brinnutz, I'll probably swap out with him to help him out. We'll see. |

I might need a stock muffler if you've got one available. I've still got the Zbracket but I don't have the front hanger. Let me know what you've got, and let's figure something out. |
