So as some of you know (and probably saw on eBay) I was lucky enough to win the Airtech tail for a whopping $51 last week. It is definately a used piece, but I am real happy with it. So I took the old body work off today and tried to place the new section on. Well, it will need a little bit of "tweeking", however I am happy to report no major fram modification! I found that on the right side of the bike the bank sensor and the ignition controller were causing some clearance issues. I am thinking the bank sensor can be removed, I will have to read up on that. I moved the ingnition box over to the next set of holes (note sure why there are two sets?) and that helped a lot. The bottom of the ignition box sticks out so that everyone can clearly read the "FOR RACE USE ONLY" stamped on it. I may have to rattle can that part. The fuse box with the two relays may also have to be moved. It looks like this will all work though without having to do any wire cutting. BONUS! Here is a pic (from my phone) of the tail on the bike.
I am still thinking all white with orange rally stripes and possibly a race number. The white on the tail section currently has a pearl coat that looks really nice, I may have to consider an orange tinted pearl over the white. Also, I am going to take one of the additional tail sections I own and have that painted white so that I can switch the bike back to being a two up machine and keep the white color scheme. All of the current Volcano Grey parts will be saved also. On a side note I would just like to say, this bike is so nice to work on as I can pretty much get to everything and find it very easy to understand how to change and fix things with my basic garage knowledge and the Shop manual. I sold my 1978 Camaro 3 years ago because it just got to overwhelming to work on and every day the weather was nice it sat in the garage while I was out riding my Cyclone. I think this M2 will be with me for a long long time. (Message edited by koz5150 on February 20, 2010) |

you went from the big butt m2 seat to the big butt airtech tail should be plenty of room for ALL your electrics under that thing if you do splice some wires. still like the dt tail better...

Fuzzy, Did you have to cut your frame loop to fit that seat? I like the way it looks. |

Fuzzy, I have a 1,000 mile trip planned for August. That tail doesn't look like a place I would want to put my butt for that long of time. Also I am not sure that tail would look right with the Manta tank. |

yea, the white/orange will look great and it's good to know you won't have to butcher anything to get what you want. hopeing to get up there toward the end of april for the granddaughters first birthday(their living outside of reedville) and hopeing to see svh while i'm there. maybe we can get over that way to take a look at the progress. i'd like to get into appleton to eat at the hu-hut, the mongolian stirfry place. |

Where hunger meets it's destiny!!! Yeah, I was not going to use the piece if I had to cut the frame. Also I wanted to be able to put the stock tailsection back on if I am going to do some 2 up riding. A few years ago I set up my tail section so I could swap it out quickly (10 minutes if even) by installing a 6 wire plug on th tail light. That way when I took the bike to the track I wouldn't have to use my stock bodywork, just in case. Lucky I did too, I had a "oops" moment and flipped the bike at 85 mph in the grass. |

thanks dave, no, no cutting. that was a priority. did grind off the tabs for the flasher i think it was, to clean up that side... ken: yeah, seat did end up pretty hard but the 5/16 foam is the same as on my xb and is comfy there. think just the difference between kidskin and cowhide. seemed to look ok with manta on mine but it wouldn't clear the bars. extra fuel would have been nice though! |

Wouw. That air tech thing is really big and ugly. I like the S1 tail on my Cyclone. The DT tail looks also nice. Ralph |

That's a Wilber's Shock IIRC. It uses a standard push pull type shock with a bit of bracketry to make it work...really neat design, costs about an arm and a leg though, and maybe a right testicle. |

The Wilbers shock has a 5 years warranty(at least in Germany)and is also available in the US. http://www.motorcycle-suspension.com/ Todays price is about 1600 USD.The Euro is falling, you know. I can say,it makes a huge difference in riding comfort and security. It is worth every cent. A good explanation how it works, regarding the Hyperpro shock, which is identical. http://lightning.prohosting.com/~buells2t/shock.ht m Regards,Ralph (Message edited by xldevil on May 08, 2010) |
