Can't get the inner core to line up with the tube protruding from the front of the muffler. Any one have suggestions on this? I think the packing is causing alignment problems but there's not any way I can figure to help that. Packing is the Bristol Core Re-pack kit, you are supposed to be able to roll the packing around the core, it's got adhesive to hold it once you've got it right. Then just stick it in the muffler body and bolt back up. I can post pics as their already taken for the new muffler owner (I was trying to do this easy job before sending it off). | ||

Try using a screwdriver/drift/piece of wood down the guts of the muffler to line up the tube,maaybe remove a little more packing material to aid in lining it up aswell. Thats how i've done it when repacking. | ||

i used fireplace rope (local HW store) wrapped around my insert. then i wrapped that in one layer of basalt/ceramic packing, should last forever.     of course this is a race muff and not a VH, but should work about the same. sorry for the hijack!!! i had a bit of a time getting this one to line up as well, i stuck a baseball bat handle down there and tweeked it over to align it. Yeah, the V&H's oval shape kept me from getting too creative. I saw that you had done that a while back Sleez, and thought it was a cool idea, maybe I'll try that on my Supertrapp when it needs repacking. Not sure a bat will fit but I'll try it, the broom stick was too small to provide any leverage. Maybe I've got some wood that will fit to stick inside but I'm unsure of how I'd retrieve it. Ted, the V&H pipe isn't really all that robust, running it without packing will cause it to vibrate to pieces in a very short time. I already had to get the core rewelded to it's endcap and the packing was still fairly intact. Run your CF unit without packing and it won't live very long. | ||

Hello Little, I have been running without packing for the last 60,000 miles on my carbon fiber V&H with no problem. I did have a problem with the stainless clamp breaking until I mounted the 3rd clamp with rubber grommets. | ||

"I have been running without packing for the last 60,000 miles on my carbon fiber V&H with no problem" I tried that with my X1 (with V&H SS2R) and while I liked the sound, it was running too lean. Besides, the bike "felt" a bit stronger in the low end with the packing in there. | ||

I should add that without the packing it is quite loud and I always coast out of earshot of my Cul-de-sac when I leave for work in the morning. If I was a bit more responsible I would repack it to quiet it down a bit.......but I'm not. | ||

As for lining it up, maybe your material is kind of tight in there? Maybe spray some WD on the pipe? I use the cheap stuff every couple years, snug but not tight, I can wiggle the thing back together as long as I clean the goo off the pipe before reassembly. As for repacking, the job isn't hard, the primary fluid is supposed to be changed every year or 2 anyway. Since the can has to come off to drain the primary, the repack is halfway done. Real easy is Moose brand sold at dirt bike shops, around 10 bucks, basically just a fiberglass sheet, then some scissors, bailing wire or a coat hanger, and a pair of latex gloves to keep the hands clean. Bike sounds and runs better with a good muffler imo. | ||

Sleez, could you post more info on your materials sources - is that some kind of Rockwool matt? I've looked for fireplace rope, but can't seem to find it. Is it a fiberglass rope? | ||

I broke down today and when I was doing an oil change and trans oil change I repacked the muffler. I packed only half the tube and it quieted the pipe quite a bit. I guess it was the right thing to do.  |
