This morning and Fri. morning I noticed as I pulled up to the shop that there was a decent tick coming from the motor. Sounded like lifter noise and the exhaust note sounded faintly kind of hollow if that makes any sense. I didnt notice and difference in performance or anything but I also wasn't beating on it either. Does anyone have any ideas on the mystery noise. The bike has always had a little tick but it seems more pronounced now. but it also goes away and I have only noticed it these two occasions. Thanks for any and all help |

BUELLers: Every 5000 miles "i" fill my gas tank and put in 8.75 oz. of STP Gas Treatment ... This is the same stuff as the HARLEY-DAVIDSON Cherry juice from the PAN HEAD days ... The valve guides in the PAN HEADS would get so dry that they would actually "SQUEAK" ... Any way the bottom line is it lubricates the valve guides to lesson the MYSTERY tappet clicking ... Run SYN3 H-D 20w50(20w50 oil is better for hydraulic tappets) changing every 3K miles also w/filter ... Have a 108,822.1 miles since the last ride and have never had any MYSTERY tappet noise ... |

Well the noise continues. I rode to church yesterday had to go down I95 and I started hearing the tick again and as I was idling down to the traffic light I heard that noise in the exhaust and it was a touch slower to idle down like it lost some of the engine braking. It doesnt seem to have lost any power on take off just a lifter sounding tick and that hollow kind of sound in the exhaust. Any input would be great. Thanks guys. Also I did put the fuel cleaner in as directed and I'm half way through the tank. Not sure if I'm just being impatient, I just dont want it to be doing any major damage. |

Sometimes a small exhaust leak will make a ticking sound. Or, you might have a lifter going bad. |

Hopefully nothing going bad. Dino 20W50 will quiet the lifters down more than syn. But that opens up the old synthetic/dino CAN O' WORMS!!! Nooooooooooooo!!! |

I would vote for an exhaust leak as well. Easy to check and fix B-4 progreessing to more complicated issues. Kilroy |

Thanks for all the input! Also the tick and exhaust noise is not always there. It comes in after a little riding. And if its a short ride under say 5 miles it doesn't seem to happen. Like usual for me it is a intermittent problem that only happens when I am not in a place with tools or the ability to troubleshoot. I have determined it MUST be a female bike. |

Change the oil and check for exhaust leaks. |
