Hi all,my 2001 M2 with 6500miles hasn't missed a beat for the last 3000 miles, a few weeks ago traveling at about 65mph for no reason started missing, backfiring etc. It will run fine at low speeds and accelerate strongly in 2 & 3 starts to miss at about 55mph in 4th and wont run cleanly in 5th at 55-60mph. If you slow down it runs OK again. It has had new inlet gaskets, exhaust port gaskets, new spark plug leads, has iridium plugs (2000 miles old) the carb has been taken apart again and checked, along with the fuel filter, have removed fuel cap while riding to no avail, I have removed the sidestand switch and cleaned battery straps etc. along with fuse connections. it sounds electrical but as it runs fine at idle and low speed you can't test to see if something is breaking down somewhere (which it obviously is)I have looked in the Knowledge Vault and can't find a similar problem to compare. I have the factory service manual. Any suggestions would be much appreciated as to what the problem could be. Thanks |

Try giving the main earth strap on the swingarm a good clean, might be a dirty earth. Ignition pickup on the timing plate ? |

check your inlet to carb seal for tightness. I drilled the hexes on the breather bolts and safety wired them. |

Many thanks to the guys who gave me some suggestions regarding the problems I have been having, I ended up taking it to a mechanic mate for an opinion and he was sure it was a fuel problem, so the carb came apart again and it was a sticking float valve (dont know how I missed it the first time). what I would like to know though is how the float valve would stick when you are riding at 65mph ( I could understand if it had been standing for a few months) and is this a common occurrence on these bikes |

it was mentioned in one of the earlier threads that changing out the valve every few years as a good preventative practice,I didnt after being stored 5 years and did not turn my valve off so am waiting to get my garage fully aired out to change all the gaskets and inlet seals etc along with the further carb mods.also Buellistic mentioned a limited service life for some inlet seals so I need to document that also for the future. |
