i have a 96 s1, is the starter solenoid the same as a sportster. i want to buy a kit for mine. but if i go to my hd dealer and say buell all i get is a blank look. | ||

What's wrong with yours, and are you sure it's not the relay? Not sure if same as sportster, try Al at American Sport Bike. +1 on the relay. Try that first. Also same as sportsters. $10 part at HD. You can also match it up with a relay at any parts store. | ||

i have replaced the battery and the relay. did find out the battery was bad. now all i get is the solenoid clicking real fast. i was looking at an old post where someone said to take the cover off the solenoid and manualy ingage it. might try that. i think its the contacts in the solenoid if they were bad would'nt that cause it to cycle back and forth. thanks for the help | ||

Don't take the cover off without disconnecting the battery first, or you will arc and cut the spring in half. Don't ask how I know. I went to an auto-electric shop and they had the contacts that wear for around $10. | ||

Book says: Solenoid Clicks? Perform Voltage Drop Tests Between Battery and "Relay" Terminal on Solenoid. Less than 1 volt? If the answer is yes it has you perform a positive voltage drop test, if answer is no it has you perform a negative voltage drop test. But eventually you will either 1) find a bad ground (resulting in your hold-in winding not holding in, thus the clicking back and forth) 2) Repair connection between battery and Starter 3) Repair or Replace Solenoid (contacts). I'd try checking/cleaning your starter ground first. (Message edited by jim2 on December 08, 2009) | ||

i hav'nt done a voltage test but will. i have other suspicions like the pos. wire going to the starter it feels and looks strange near the batt terminal. could be coming apart inside the covering. i did the ground but will be a little more thorough. may just make up some new wires. thanks for your ideas | ||

It's pretty easy to inspect the solenoid contacts, just take the cover off the solenoid. You'll most likely find the ring contact and one of the side contacts severely eroded. One side wears faster than the other which causes the plunger to tip sideways at the end of its travel. Eventually the ring contact on the plunger fails to contact both side contacts. All you get is "click". | ||

Check your ground strap from the frame to the swing arm. I'll bet you'll find something there. Do a negative voltage drop test to the swing arm. More than 1 volt and you've found your problem. |
