I have been collecting parts for the rebuild for sometime, I have seen pics of some that have been done on here, nice looking! Can anyone give the low down on the late model Al swingarm swap on the S2. What mods need to be done, etc. I tried to search with no luck. Thanks, Scott |

some people have had clearance issues, others have not. To do the swap, you need basically all the the parts that bolt to the swingarm from the later model bike- the hugger, belt guard, swingarm mount, nissin caliper, caliper brzcket, late wheel spacers, axle spacers, and of course the swingarm itself. I do not know if you continue to use S2 style isolators or if you use the the later style ones with this swap. I have an aluminum swingarm (swingarm onlyP) that I'll let go cheap if you want to do this swap and are interested in it. Ross |

There are clearance issues with the rear downtubes on the S-2 frame. If you are a lightweight you may never notice but 2 up it will bottom out. |

Thanks for the reply fellows! I have the swingarm, and now that I have mocked it up; it sure hits the down tubes on the frame.I have seen others on here that have one on it, did they modify it? or live with it? It also looks like the mounting block needs some clearance also. scott |

I have done swoop and I am 180 lbs. have White-Power Shock and a 130 lbs girl-friend and does not bottom, shock set at stiff settings. Also have put a lot of preload on WP shock.I think even with newer ark still can not use newer rear isos. |

It will bottom if you use ether Showa shocks not strongly sprung as well as WP.I prefer a stiffer ride anyway. |

Thanks Butch, yours was one of the ones I saw. I think I will modify the swingarm so I get some clearance. I am using a works shock, so I will need some more room. Plus I am moving the mounts for the hugger and other parts as Ross pointed out , they wont fit currently. Scott |

Yes I looked for it with no luck. Thanks! I compared the travel with my stock swing arm, to the 99 and its about an 1" different. So I modeled it up in cad and did an FEA analysis and looks like notching the swing arm will work. Then I'll take an al tube slice it in half and weld it in and smooth. I'll try to post pics. Scott |

Aaomy, I hope you do not mind but I added your conversion instructions to the yahoo S2 group at: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/Buell_S2_Thund erbolt_owners/ I had to edit it for size. If that is a problem, let me know and I will delete it. Thanks, Frank |

That link's a classic that I saved to my hard drive way back when. The etch at the end just topped it off. I haven't been able to get our rabbit to help me out with any of my projects. Igor was apparently one of a kind! |

Aaron Any chance on seeing your new old Swing arm I do like looks of reinforced older swing Arm ?And Scott very interested in your notched ark and welding, notch fill(Good thinking!).When done post pics please sounds very good!I have less travel with shock mechanical preload shortened. But rides very good and does not bottom even with passinger! It would be even better with a little more travail!

Aaron I really like your Custom Marine header Court taught me how to tell difference between them and Supper Trapp ,and guessing it would be one of the last S2Ts made.Your lucky to have that header as I see it.It is a better looking Header! And it must be more efficient, smoother slower bend.

here are a couple picks of the braced swing arm.. when i got it she was black.. cleaned it all up and had it powder coated silver..
i like the look and the lines of the aluminum swing arm better but the braced one gives full travel with a look that is .. ebutch,, custom marine header?? that is the factory race pipe and race can,, i have been modifying a borla muffler to fit on the race header.. i have a borla for my stock s2 header but it restricted flow more than i liked, the race pipe and race can flow more than i like.. so i figure that the race pipe and 2 1/2" borla can should be perfect.. lets just say its not an easy fit stuffing a borla on the end of a race header.. |

Ya I tried it on my S3 did not work either.Borla is a deep nice sounding muff on S3 with stock header.S3 factory race now.It did fit once. |

That looks like a lot of work. Is that a cut and weld project? Will it clear the bar below the oil tank with that notch? Keep going! |

Yes it will clear, its a cut /weld deal. Machined the notch then weld Al tubing in and smooth. Both sides are done to clear the frame supports. It allows the swingarm to move an extra 1 1/2 before it hits the support, I will post more pics when the motor is back in the frame to show it in relation to the frame. Scott |

Wow! That looks like it will be really nice. What's the diameter of the Al pipe and do you have some measurements of where to start/stop the cut points? |

It is 1.5 inch Al tubing. 1/8 wall stock so the i.d. is 1.25 thick. For the cut points, I mounted the swingarm in the mounts and rotated the arm until it came in contact with the support tubes and marked it with a sharpie. Then you can get a good idea where you need to cut. Here is the tricky part remember this moves on pivot/ i.e. a radius so the line has to move back because as it travels up it will contact the tube further back. I mounted my stock swingarm and shock with axle and ratchet strapped it up until the shock bottomed out and measured the axle to the lift. Then compared it to the new swingarm and it was 1.5" less. I kept leaning the tube back with the cut until it had .250 clearance. I hope that will be enough, I will reassemble and see if it hits. Scott |

Scott, You need to post this in the Coolest Parts Thread! This solves the problem of hitting the brace bar, and looks great doing it! Great job, keep it up and post some pictures when when you get in back on the bike. |

Scott, Sometime before next winter I'd like to pick up a frame and build a bike with this mod. If you can pick up some measurements points it would be a big help since I'd be starting from scratch. Thanks, |

No problem, I'll post more pics and detailed measurements. For what its worth, my plan is to have it done and have it at Homecoming. One thing has led to another on this build. The xb wheels are also going on, even the front. So I bought an electronic speedometer and machined the cases for the speed sensor. Plus a Backer 6 speed trans. I have been collecting parts for several years and cant wait to ride her again! Oh, who all is going to the Homecoming? Scott |
