Well I'm looking at a 1996 Buell S1 Lighting, with 16k miles. Bike has always been well taken care of. Runs perfect, no leaks and is ready to ride. It has a carbon fiber huger and air filter cover, race header and a jet kit. whats the "problem areas" i should double check on this bike during my test ride? hes asking $3,500, but i talked him down to $3,000, do you think the bikes worth it? also just out of curiosity, with 16k miles on the bike, should there be any issues or things i should keep a close eye on? what are these 1200cc engines good for mile wise? oh one more thing whats the difference between the S1 and the S1W? thanks, and sorry for all the "noob" questions. |

I wouldn't be afraid of the $3k price. S1 had standard heads and small tank, I want to say 92hp engine spec. S1W had thunderstorm heads, different cams, different ignition, 5 gallon fuel tank, and 101hp spec. Giveaway is the black cylinder heads on a silver motor for the S1W. Check for rockerbox leaks, overall gasket leaks. With 16k I'd bet most of them have leaked by now and been fixed with updated gaskets. Check the rear shock for leaks. Check the bottom header hangar for cracks, there's an updated one that looks more like the "truck balls" than a flat piece of steel (weird description..but first thing I thought of). Otherwise...ride, smile, and buy. You're gonna love it! |

The things Joe mentioned are good for a pre-purchase inspection. If you buy it, pull the primary cover off and install a new chain tensioner (if it hasn't already been done). I haven't had one break, but my S1 tensioner was cracked at 14,000 miles when I pulled the cover. It'll be lots of fun, but keep in mind they aren't a touring bike...not much seat there. |

Don't think anyone's selling them new anymore, they turn up in the classifieds or on the bay occasionally. |
