What would strip first...threads on the banjo bolt or threads inside the head? (please say BOLT, please say BOLT....) |

I tightened my to much and the bolt broke. That was enough for me to switch rocker covers! No problems since |

Talkin bout banjo bolts, Wiz. So I could use helicoil...thats a little comforting. Never used it before. Is it a quick fix, or strong enough to be a permanent fix? Thanks Hugie. Trust me RT, as soon as I get home Im gonna check for damage. Are yall using crush washers? (Message edited by torquemonster on August 05, 2009) |

the banjo bolts for the crank case breather right? Thats what broke on mine then I switched to the xb rocker boxes so the crank breathers are on the top of the covers. |

Oh, i get you now. Hmm...so when you switch to the xb rocker box covers you block off the old breather holes in the jugs...didnt think about that. thanks, man. |

You still need the bolt holes to bolt on the carb support bracket. If the head is stripped, use a Helicoil or one of the Timserts (sp?). Brad |

"You still need the bolt holes to bolt on the carb support bracket." right...i was just thinking "block off" in terms of using regular bolts to seal it up. Ill be back in Florida on Sunday and will assess the damage (hopefully none) then. Man, I hope i didnt strip it. |

I doubt you stripped the head--the threads are coarse, and the hole through the hollow shaft weakens the banjo bolt. I broke one off on my Road Pig, and the broken stub backed right out, didn't need an EZ-out or anything. rt |

And if you do helicoil to repair an aluminum hole, the helicoil repair is typically stronger then the original was, FWIW. |

awesome. Thanks very much you guys. Im thinking/hoping its just the bolt. I was tightening it down very gingerly and felt juuuust a bit of give. I stopped turning immediately. Didnt back it out, cuz I was afraid Id find the worst, plus, I had to be on a plane shortly after so I didnt have the time to mess around anymore. HD doesnt seem to know what I mean by "crush" washers. What can I say so that theyll understand? Fingers crossed all the way home! |

Say "crush washer, like on a brake line". If you felt a little bit of give, then stopped...my bet is you started to break the head off the banjo as opposed to stripping the threads. Wall thickness on the breathers is...thin. |

It's the bolt. I'd wager money. Mine did the same thing. |

I did the same thing and got to greedy. Just grab a small chisel and hammer and gently tap the inner hole CCW and it should back out. Good luck. |

When I switched over to xb breather system It costed about $150.00 and now I don't have that little filter hanging there. Those banjo bolts suck! Ever since I put regular bolts to hold the carb on I haven't had any problems |

You can just get the individual peices from hd to do the rocker conversion for far cheaper than buying the "kit" online. I broke a banjo in the head last time i had the carb/intake off. The bolt broke and nothing was stripped. It backed out just fine |

That'd be cool. American Sport Bike has em for $225, which isnt bad, but if I can save $75 bucks... Im sure my buddy at Pcola Buell can get his hands on an extra for me. The crew I ride with is gonna patch me before I leave for AZ and I thought itd be kinda gay to cage it to the party. Not a life or death situation, but pretty important to me. Prognosis in 13.5 hours... (Message edited by torquemonster on August 09, 2009) |

next question... which side installs to the bracket? this side-
or this side-
instructions didnt specify & ive tried both ways. both leaked, but probably due to lack of crush washer. |

here are the part #'s front cover is 17605-00yb, the back cover is 17642-02a, The grommet (you need two of these) 17606-00ya, and the pcv valve 17607-00y. When you put these covers on you eliminate the spacer that is on your bike now. Take the cover of and the spacer off and install new gaskets and new covers. There is a hole in the top of the rocker cover that the grommet and pcv valve goes into then all you need is some black hose and a t and I routed mine up the tail to the back of the bike to filter. It works good, I don't get any oil but once and awhile i take the hoses off and blow them out to make shure the are clear. If you run into any problems let me know, it's pretty easy though. The only other thing you will need is 2 bolts to put your bracket back on the motor. I think it is a way better system than the stock one and I see alot of M2's that have been switched over, It looks alot cleaner! |

Thanks for the advice, all. I went to the local HD store to try to pick up the bolts...what an ordeal that was. So I called Al (American Sport Bike) and he sold me the breather kit for $20.00 and itll be shipped priority mail. American Sport Bike FTW Now...which side of the 360 breather should I turn towards the motor? |

You can try copper washers on both sides if it still leaks. I would do machined surface in because the head is machines for better sealing but I don't think it will matter much. |

yup...Al said machined side TO the engine. Put about 200 miles on since the install and NO leaks. (not counting the friggin engine case...grumble grumble) |
