Got back from a ride Sunday. Came out 10 minutes later and there was gas dripping out of the carb overflow hose. It was a slow drip. Petcock had been shut off since I had parked the bike 10 min earlier. I have been riding for 27 years and never actually seen gas come out of an overflow hose until yesterday. Maybe it happens all the time and I never noticed it, but it has been bothering me as to why it was happening, especially with the petcock off. If the float was stuck in the open position, I assume gas would have been pouring out of the overflow until all the gas in the fuel line between the tank and the carb emptied, but it was just a slow drip. Any advice / comments as to why this was happening - gas expansion in the bowl due to heat etc? This is no big deal but it is gnawin' at me - Thanks Kilroy | ||

Not sure if this is the same issue but a few weeks ago I came back from a ride and I noticed that my Mikuni was leaking out of the overflow. A bit more that you describe but I hadn't turned the petrol off yet. I pulled the carb off and it was full of this jelly stuff as was the fuel in the tank. The bike seemed to be running OK until I got home. Hope this was of some help Regards Lee | ||

Its probably just a bit of gunge in the needle valve , take the plug out of the bottom and give the float a bit of a rattle. | ||

This is my 3rd year of owning Buell's (2000-2001) and I just had it happen for the first time a couple weeks ago. Must have had an intake valve open because it hydro locked one of the cylinders. I ended up pulling the plugs and blowing the fuel out. Then of course checked the oil for gas smell. Well I started it up and took it for a short run then parked it in the garage and kept an eye on it while working on another project. Since then I have not had a problem with it but am still wary. I have had numerous bikes over the years and suspected the needle/seat but it was very hot that day and did blow out the vent line. Well the other bikes haven't done it. So I'll keep watching it. Wow, this happened to me last month, I was stopped at a light on my M2 and the car next to me pointed to my bike and said, "you're leaking water". Kind of scary, since I know it's not water! It was coming from the bowl overflow tube. Anyway, I took the bowl off and sprayed carb cleaner up the float valve, blew some compressed air around, and put it back together. No more leak. So I'm guessing some crud was in the float valve, making it stick open? |
