Hello, looking to buy a cherry (I hope) 02 S3T. Bike is in another state so I can not really see it before I buy it! (it is at a dealer though). Questions. What should I look for & or out for on this model? All I do is tour, could this bike do this? And how is the dependability. I like the bike & it's seating possition/comfort, but I am concerned about breaking down in the middle of no where. I have ridden German bikes for the last 20 years with no problems. So I do not wish to go back to the bad old days of no starts, breakdowns & parts falling off! Any hints from S3T owners would be nice. Thanks. |

See some of the isolator threads. I've got an 02 S3T that's been quite reliable. Right now I have an issue with the starter solenoid. Rocker box gaskets and speedometer sending unit are about the only things I had a problem with to begin with and I bought the bike brand new in 2002. |

2001 S3 with 37K miles. MINOR stuff initially - all fixed. Rocker box gaskets removed/replaced. Clock couldn't be set. Temperature sensor failure... all warranty fixes. Shock is going to be iffy. Think of the shock as a 20,000 mile shock and plan on replacing it with a Works. You can have it rebuilt by Racetech (or so I've heard) - when it goes, it is really squirrely to ride with the damping gone. The bike is reliable as a rock... but I don't ever push the revs up really high. Heck, I can ride it for days and rarely bust 3700 RPM (about 80MPH) Check oil often - consider getting the Banke oil filler/dipstick. It'll keep the oil filler plug from backing out and spewing oil. Allows you to run nearly to the full mark (filling to "full" will piss oil out the filler) http://www.bankeperformance.com/buell/fillers.html Isolators do need to be looked at - changing isn't easy - frame needs to be "spread" I doubt I'll ever sell my S3 (S3T is just an S3 with bags and fairing lowers added ) |

I've got an 01 S3T with 56K+ miles. I use it for both local and touring rides. I've been stranded twice, once in Gillette Wyoming with a head temp sensor and once on I-680 (north SF Bay) with a broken belt. The belt could have been prevented had I replaced it around 40-50K miles. I've had a variety of irritants, rocker box gaskets, crankcase blow-by leaking out of the airbox, saddlebags cracking at the mounting points, speedo sensor, odometer reset button. I've fixed all of these things but none of them stranded me. It's a great ride! I'm glad that Buell makes the Ulysess so I know what my next bike will be. Barry Hollister, CA |
