I am rather new at owning a bike,My M2 is my first bike,I love it.I am having problems when shifting from 1st to 2nd gear,it often goes into neutral from 1st,sometimes it shifts right to 2nd without going into nuetral, this seems to have become more of a problem this last year. does anyone else have this issue? Any ideas what this problem could be and how to resolve it? any ideas would be helpful. Thanks

Shift harder?

Maybe try adjusting the shift arm so you don't have to raise your foot as much.

1) Get the belt tension right. Following the service manual often leads people to adjust it too tight... just run it scary loose. I settled on an adjustment process where I sit on the bike, and reach down, and pull the belt to touch the swingarm. The belt would just begin to be under tension at the moment it touches. Basically just enough tension to keep it off the swingarm most of the time.

2) Follow the clutch adjustment processes by the book... from the lever to he cable tension bolts to under the derby cover.

3) Run good primary oil. HD Formula Plus is probably your best choice.

4) Adjust the primary chain tension by the book.

It took all these being right to make my M2 shift smoothly. An aftermarket Banke shifter kit helped as well.

If you have the primary apart for some other reason, you can make sure that shifter pawl is adjusted by the book, and that its little cams don't have any burr's, and that the shifter drum pins have not backed out..

wasn't there was an updated shifting 'star' released in 2000?

which moved the false neutral to the 2-3 shift -

Adjust clutch.

It was said before. Adjust the shifter so it is lower. This will make you shift further up and make it skip neutral.

All good pieces of advice. Mine does that too and I have to remember to shift more deliberately. Shift it like ya mean it and it should be fine.

Shift it like it's a tractor and you'll do fine. I also found synthetic primary fluid really improves shifting (compared to sport trans, aaack) I've used Mobile 1, Royal Purple and Syn 3 (currently in my tranny and engine). I liked the mobile gear oil the best but it's bad for the stator.
