Okay, this is probably a really stupid question, especially for people who know the answer. I am wondering what all variations the S1W came in? I keep seeing them for sale both here and locally in different color schemes. They're all '98 models, but I don't get all the colors: White body/white frame White body/blue frame White body/black frame Black body/black frame Are all these original options? I suspect not, but want to know how to tell when I'm looking at a good, original bike. | ||

Molten Orange bodywork I think there was Silver bodywork too Gray frame AFAIK 4 frames and 4 bodywork options. I could be wrong. I know someone has a scan of the brochure that showed all the options... | ||

16 colors. I've got, buried somewhere, a case of posters that showed them all. 4 frame colors, 4 body colors. The Lightning Strike was not sold in the United States. | ||

Wow...Thanks! So, any good way to tell original from after-the-fact modifications? Court, if you ever run across those posters and happen to be "cleaning out the garage", I'd love to take one off your hands for a fair price. (Message edited by ponti1 on June 30, 2009) | ||

If you have a VIN, you can PM it to me and I can run it through H-Dnet. That will show the as-built coloring, at least bodywork and wheels. Frame is easier to tell - if it has the stickers, it's probably stock. They're a b**ch to remove and reinstall, and AFAIK they can't be had as "reproductions". IIRC, the colors were: Body: Ice White Pearl Billet Metallic (silver) Carbon Black Molten Orange Frame: Sky White Black Nuclear Blue (and I can't remember the fourth - was it silver?). Wheels could be either frame-color-matched Castalloy, or polished PM. | ||

Fourth color was Billet Metallic. I have .. but I'd have not idea where to look . . all the .xls files and build sheets that detail everything about every bike, including "specials" that was built and notes any deviations on individual units. What a great year that was. My cousin, who is a daily rider and owns 7 bikes, had never ridden a Buell nor flown in an aeroplane. I flew him to Milwaukee and when we got to my place in Waukesha I had two S1WL's (a US and a Euro spec) waiting and we spent the day having a ball on a couple pre-production bikes. A couple days later there was a BattleTrax event and Stephen won. About a month later . . his partner at work, who happened to be reading a copy of Thunder Press . . . asked him "Hey Stephen. . . remember the day you called in sick last month? Well the same day some guy who looked like you won some kinda trophy in Milwaukee" and handed Stephen a copy of the photo with Wilke and Reg Kittrelle presenting him the trophy . . . Ooooooooooooooops.  Great memories. | ||

You are welcome . . . I had to look on an old 160gb portable drive I had in my briefcase and found about 500 photos of old Buell ads and stuff.

It is best to run PM wheels with the white frames so you do not worry about the frame so much. "Build a bike like this and you don't need to manufacture an attitude" I love it. That may be pre-HD advertising days. I think it is a slam on HD and their ready made weekend badass image they sell. | ||

Take a look at ANY of the shirts pre-1999 and they are ALL cool. There are one, maybe two, in this years catalog I'd take if they gave them to me. Totally missed the Buell demographic. It will be much better in 14 days. | ||

This turned into a great little discussion...Sorry I missed out on it, but I've been pulling double shifts all week. Thanks to all for the information and sharing of memories! I have been wanting an S1W for a while now for a number of reasons, but camping out at Homecoming actually for some reason really had me thinking I wanted an S2. Not sure why... | ||

Must have been the Go-go-gadget smokescreen option on my S2, LOL. (which appears to be fixed, now that I realized I "broke in" my new top end - 7k miles ago - with Syn3, and have run 20w50 for the last few hundred miles and the rings appear to actually be seating). Just beware. You can ask either me or Frank - S2's like having S1W stablemates! | ||

"S2's like having S1W stablemates!"  I'm partial to the nuclear Blue frame and wheels, but I love the white bodywork, and think it would contrast well with the Nuc Blue. | ||

Rousseau, that's a nice looking S1W...I saw it when you posted it and was talking to my wife about it.  Then, a tractor trailer sideswiped her Explorer on the interstate yesterday. Hit-n-run. Everyone safe, but car passenger side thrashed. I now need to see what this mess is gonna cost to clean up before making any purchases. Funny thing is, I was looking to make a similar purchase at the beginning of this year, and the same Explorer had the transmission fail. Just can't seem to get ahead... |
