I don't think my speedometer had even reached 140 and I hit my Race ECM rev limiter in 5th. I thought rev limiter in 5th was about 145mph or so. Considering speedometers read faster than actual speed, what could be happening. |

limiter is rpm based, I think you should try it again and see what your rpms were when you hit it

You're geared too low if your hitting the rev limiter and need to go faster. Your speedo is off too. Unless your motor is incredibly modified you're not doing 140. Most tracks will have radar if you really need to know how fast you're going. What's really the difference if you're going 130 or 140...you're still moving fast. My honda indicated 178 (when it had a speedo) and radar showed only 166 at Daytona. |

ShadowracerX1: Put a XB12 motor sprocket and primary chain on ... This will not affect the OEM Speedometer sensor set up ... Unless you have a real strong engine you will not hit the REV LIMIER in high gear ... If you want the Part Numbers, e-mail me so that "i" can get your e-mail address and "i" will e-mail them to you ... MAY TH LONG LASTING BUELL BE WITH YOU !!! |

The Tach was past 6000 when it hit(I didn't look down long). The bike engine is modified but not heavily. After I installed the fairing and with just the full D&D system and Power Commander I hit the limiter often. It has stock gearing. Spidey - I'll never give up my X1. I rode an F3 and it felt like a toy filled with angry bees. (Message edited by shadowracerx1 on June 29, 2009) |

i've hit 140 on my 02 X1. its stock other than RACE ECM, V&H pipe and K&N filter. At 140mph I was at about 6600rpms (just shy of the rev limiter). |

Rebuild after this just one time and I'm guessing you won't be as interested in bouncing off the rev limiter:

that was the '02 when I bought it, but yeah it dropped the exhaust valve. 6600 miles on the odometer. I don't understand why someone would abuse an engine like that. |

Mine dropped both valves in both cylinders at low rpm and only 5500 miles on the motor, And to my knowledge there were some bad valves that were installed in the motors of 2000 models and some 2001 x1's. I still have both my valve stems and both had snapped off at the valve lock groove to which can only be explained as a bad grind on the stem at the lock's groove. It is not a coincidence that both valves that broke off at exactly the same points are both exhaust valves as well. I would like to hear about an intake valve going out in this year(s) specific bike model, I dont think there are any? |

I dropped an exhaust valve on my engine during a low speed turn... hence the rebuild. I'm not intentionally trying to hit the rev limiter but it in and of itself is an engine safety feature right? |

It's a safety feature, but it's a worst case scenario type thing. The factory decided that 6800 (or is it 7100?) is the highest rpm that this engine can safely perform at, so that's where they put the limiter. Personally, I've got higher standards for my bike than that. I enjoyed my last rebuild project, but not enough to abuse the bike and do it again in less than 50k miles. |

BUELLers: 6800 RPM works good on basiclly stock engines which goes back to the late 50's(1958-1959) ... When you engine stops making HP it is time to shift which can be determined on a DYNO ... THERE IS NO REASON TO "SCREAM" and engine after it has quits making HP !!! The reason the OEM REV Limiters limit to 6500 RPM is the BOTTOM END will last longer ... Over 7000 RPM you need to have car type insert bearings ... NOW LET THE DEBATE BEGIN !!! MAY THE LONG LASTING BUELL BE WITH YOU !!! |

Piston velocities of the XL engine EXCEED those of the Honda 954 and the Yamaha R1, among various other Hyper Sport bikes at peak HP. Proceed with EXTREME caution when using the rev limiter on these bikes... |

But... but... I only hit it in 5th gear... I s'pose I could get a Baker 6-speed to resolve the issue. |

The engine doesn't care what gear you're in.. redline is redline is redline. And like Lafayette pointed out, it's beyond the peak of the power band so you're shortening your engine's life and getting no benefits. If you're already in 5th and consider doing 140mph indicated a benefit then maybe an IL4 would better satisfy your need for speed. |

Buellistic and Sloppy both hit the nail on the head about RPM...we are dealing with long stroke pushrod motors...the valvetrain is heavy and complicated (compared to shim under bucket OHC motors) and the stroke gets the piston speed into the critical zone (around 4200-4500 fpm)at low (ish) rpm...'specially with big ole heavy cast pistons. Keep the engine within safe limits..or it will die...as a side note, the XB9 and Blast engines with their shorter stroke are capable of more rpm before they reach critical piston speeds....but neither are capable of the kind of extreme rpm that the very short stroke/highly oversquare import motors are capable of... Piston speeds at peak HP (data pre-06): X1: 4163 ft/sec XB9: 3632! R1: 3791 954: 3971 '06 Race XBRR (published): 4152 You really sure you want to bounce off the rev limiter in the 1200 XL engine? I never shift past 5500 rpm on the street (at 3600 fps, that's fast enough). |

Fast1075: Need to get you a XB12 motor sprocket and primary chain like "i" put on mine(BLAST) so you can get down the road a little faster before you hit the REV Limiter ... The BLAST has the "GRUNT" to pull the higher motor sprocket gearing ... Have not put this combination on my S3T yet, "BUT" when it gets done it will make it a much smoother INTERSTATE CRUISER and will be able to wind longer in the gears when doing the back roads(will not have to shift as much) ... This was an old TRIUMPH(late 50's/early 60's) trick, ie: run faster in 3rd, "BUT" run smoother in 4th to stay together(cut down on vibration so they did not shake apart) ... MAY THE LONG LASTING BUELL BE WITH YOU !!! |
