>>>>Court - I thought all S1's came with the (carbon fiber) hugger-mounted license plate?

They did.

The first year it was "natural" (exposed) carbon fiber. Then we realized that with numbers picking up we weren't very good at carbon fiber. For 1997 the rear inner fender was carbon fiber but shot with a coating of Vy-Lon.

That S-1 is a fine example and at $3,000 would be a good investment in addition to an absolute hoot to ride.

One of my test bikes (B-031) was that very same red and I have some great stories. . . it was the bike that was "wiped off" . . . not "wiped out" . . . but "wiped off".

Remind me to tell you sometime.

Took Harley-Davidson 2 years to find it.

>>tracking down a missing front brake caliper support pin.

I have a box somewhere I think . . . if not, it'd be easy to get.

That is a REALLY good deal. I'd do a couple things to bring it back to stock but be mindful that you can still purchase parts from Buell.

Could end up being THE classic Buell.

So Court...(risking a hijack) - what's the correct fender for my '95 S2? It's Vylon-ed CF from what I can tell - where the belt guard rubs against the frame spar on the left, it shows (what looks like) green CF.

Also, looking at the pics at the top - wouldn't that have an early M2 (or maybe even S2 or 3?) hugger on it, from a bike that had the plate under the light? It has the character line around the edge...doesn't look like a cut-down stock S1 hugger.

Yeh, I'm fixating...trying to keep my focus away from the whole bike, so I don't try and bring it home : )

the bike is located in MA. I have no claim to the bike, ive exchanged a couple of emails with the owner, but Cash is king. feel free to email the owner and see if it's something you'd be interested in.

It does seem as though a lot of people have tried to lowball him, i mean really lowball him, and if the bike is as nice as it appears i think it's absolutely worth what he wants. From his emails it seemed he was just really against shipping the bike, thats understandable. give it a shot Kalali, then i can take my eyes off it and get back on track to find an S2!

I think he is just against shipping. When I replied to him he was asking $3350 I think. Would have gladly paid that. Since then I have spent approximately $2000 on my X1 with the plan to spend another $2-3k on on performance work this winter. My point is he has passed on some cash deals that havn't all been law balls. Can't buy the bike and ride back to TN (at this point). I think he has alienated a lot of potential buyers.

1995 S2 would have been the green carbon fiber.

1996 saw the introduction of the nylon stick-on where the belt rubbed. Factory used black, I have the white prototype on my 1995.

This S1 is a steal and we have plenty of folks right in the area who could pickup easily. Now you have me looking.

Weird. My S1W had a bare carbon fibre "rear fender". I still have it, but it's not mounted for fear of damage.

If it does it's not stock. It is either a factory "special" build or aftermarket.

My 97 S1 came with a fender just like this. All of the ones that our dealership got were carbon with a clearcoat. I think what he meant by bare was that you can see the weave, not painted.

I'll check tonight but the bike in that picture is a 1998 S1WL. I can see that it's had a D&D exhaust and an Odessy battery added and I don't **think** the rear fender is stock but I can look when I get home and have time to check the 1998 Build Log.

I have that same rear fender on my S1W, and from the original print ads (I have copies of 'em at home, courtesy of Brankin), that fender looks to be the OEM one. It's what I have on my bike now (thanks, Frank!) and it's the same as what was on my ex's bone-stock '96 S1. Back then I thought it was goofy...now I love it.

For what its worth - the '00 p&a catalog shows a shorty inner fender in CF, listed as a "high-tech carbon fiber alternative" with a 395g weight savings over stock. One part number listed for 99-00 Lightning, one number for 97/8 Cyclone, 96-98 Lightning, 98 White, and 97/8 Thunderbolt.

And the picture does look like an S1W - Manta tank, nuke frame/wheels.

Now my S2...it has a black coated fender that has the same texture as the factory hugger on Kim's 02 M2L (sorta spotty texture black), no clear thingy to protect from the rubbing (that's exposing an area of green CF).

Ah. I *love* the tuber days - even the build process had a ton of character, LOL : )

I have fallen in love! With the S1 ('96-'98)

I have owned motorcycles my whole life. I ride a '07 Ulysses, of all the bikes I have owned I like the Uly 2nd best. I have great memories of my 1984 RZ 350. That bike will always be 1st!

I am now shopping for another Buell. Could I be addicted?

Responding(politely)to Capital G 's comment about alienating some potential buyers:

I have received only One Reasonable Offer on this bike...which was your offer....I have had tire kickers contact me offering $1500, $2000, even $2500 and the guy who offered $2500 intended on chopping the bike up and parting it out on Ebay (donkey)>and they all acted like I owed it to them to sell it to them because they're short the dough and I should (as one guy said) "be a sport and let him have it for $1750..."
...You were the only one who made an Honest and Fair offer on the bike...but as I'd told you, I simply wasn't interested in shipping the bike. Reaon: The only purchase I've ever been burned on was a bike that was shipped to me (my fault: I overlooked an issue that I would have caught had I seen it in person, and the seller wasn't quick to offer the info, preferring instead to make the sale)...I believe that any prospective buyer should be able to see it up close, hear it, ride it
...but I'm revising my view, given every offer (beyond yours) has been nothing short of silly...and, of those offers, not one (local) responder actually took the time to look at the bike...Instead just knocking off a quick email asking that I take half of my asking price. When I invited each one of them to take a look in person, they either got cold feet, wanted to think about it, or even worse...they arranged a meeting and then never showed up...Hell, would it kill them to just call and say they're not interested rather than simply blowin' the seller off...
...But I guess it all goes with the territory of selling anything.
...In the great scheme of things. I'm fortunate...I have a tuber and it runs like a top...and each time I take it for a ride, I understand (more) the cult following these bikes have....they really are unique, handle really well, and whether your a fan of them or not, they always make you do a double take when one passes by....which can't be said of the vast majority of bikes on the road

Oh well....I'm riding it today...might as well enjoy it

Distance was the issue...not your offer...

It's a great bike . . . I darn sure would not be insulted, nor would I respond to those ridiculous offers. You have no obligation to accept less than what you are asking.

Heck . . . take the reasonable offer and I'll come pick it up for them.

It's a good looking S1.

Ferris- I re-read my post and I guess it does sound a little shi$#y. That was not my intention. I apologize. I can see your point. As a potential buyer I am nervous making on offer to buy a bike I havn't seen in person.(I am a very picky person and notice things that most people wouldn't notice or wouldn't even care). But I see it like this - it is the buyers responsibility to make a wise decision, the seller should not be responsible for missed items, it's a chance you take as a long distance buyer. And, I would only offer to buy a bike long distance if it were at a good price and not full on retail. In the case of your bike I'm sure I would have pulled the trigger shortly after talking to you. I figure if I bought it and didn't like it when it arrived it might take a while but I could sell it for what I had in it and come out even. Nice bike and good luck with the sale.

Court, you have forgotten more than most will ever know about Buells, and apparently one of those things is that the 96 S1 hugger had the Vy-Lon coating and the 97/98 had a clear coat, once the carbon work improved.

The carbon work was never improved. It was outsourced along with part (about 50%) of the painting to the same company that Honda used at the time.

Well after much deliberation i have emailed the owner to tell him i was going to pass. if i had the additional 3K on top of what i've saved for an S2 purchase i would already have grabbed this bike, but i don't. So i am continuing my search for what i really want an S2. I just wish i could find one in this good of shape for this price!

Someone needs to step up and buy this bike it really is a beauty. I hope with all my heart this doesn't become a donor bike, it would be ashame!

Well . . . as usual . . . . you folks are right and I was wrong . . chalk it up to advancing years and the onset of Courtsheimers.

The good news is that I have all the internal files and product data so here's kind of the run down.

1995 S2 had Buell homemade exposed (the greenish stuff) carbon fiber inner fender. For 1996, both the S1 and the S2 had carbon fiber with Vynalon coating sprayed over it. One of the changes (see below) to the 1997 S1 was the exposed weave carbon fiber that came from an outside vendor.

At the time it made no sense, with the pressures of increasing demand, to do this internally. In addition many folks had been redeployed, after the High Voltage Yellow paint problems to evaluating (long story but we painter MANY tanks in pairs and put one on the roof and one in a dark room and compared them every two weeks) and finding a proper and stable orange that we were intending to name MOLTEN ORANGE and roll out in 1998.

The rear inner fender on this 1997 S1 looks to be correct. Someone, by the way, at $3,000, is going to steal this bike . . . . I'm resisting cause I don't want to live single again!

Court, I have a 96 S1 in my garage that was in the family since new so I had a bit of an advantage. There are a few other changes not mentioned on that sheet that you can probably add some history to. One is that the 96 S1 had a front motor mount that was very similar to the S2 mount (different bolt hole size but webbed like the S2). The other is that the 96 S1 was the only model and year to have a fiberglass (or is it carbon) air box as opposed to plastic.

I'd have to dig out some of the advertising literature . . . (by the way 1996 was a very cool year for it . . Laughlin-Constable did it) and look. All I have here on the desk is all prototype files . . some of it was pre-release and some things got changed.

You may have noticed that yellow S1 that graved the cover of Cycle World had a couple major changes before it saw production.

Thank you Court for confirming my suspicions. My S2 (which you've seen) was updated by the original owner in '96 with lots of S2T parts - bags, lowers, drop pegs....and apparently a Vylon rear hugger is on the list too. Unless it was a running change on late '95s - my bike is #1365/1399.

If the vylon isn't OEM for my bike, I'd love to find an original, correct greenie for it.

Oh. And just get the S1. You can keep it down here in MD if you want, I'll keep it in good running order for ya ; )
